M Vitale – sorry don’t know much about Barbara Greenwood. I was friendly with her sister Darleen. I am 60 and Darleen would be about the same age. I would guess her sister Barbara would be about 56/57. I know Darleen went to St. Michaels Grammar School – don’t know about her sister. I think Darleen went to Christ the King HS. I could be wrong – it was a long time ago. Thanks for writing.

Hi Jack – I couldn’t remember Sandy’s brother or sisters names – thanks I remember them now. And now that you mentioned this, I do remember Sandy’s mom being a hair stylist. They were a nice family – lots of fun, I do remember that. I heard Sandy became a camera woman for a major tv station way back when. She moved to California at that point.

Now for a “small world”. Back in 1962 (I have a great memory for dates), Tommy Long and I were an “item”. We dated for a while and I would meet him on the el train many days on the way home from high school. You may have even been with him at the time. We’ll never know! He and all the Long family were are our wedding. I don’t recall an accident or anything happening to Tommy during that time. Just about a year ago, I read in the paper that Mike Long’s (Tommy’s brother) son, a NYC fireman, was seriously injured on the way to work. He was biking and was a victim of a hit and run. He has been undergoing extensive treatments since there were head injuries. Maybe you might be
thinking of that incident.

Anyway, thanks for responding. It’s fun to look back – I really miss those days!!

Jack Tomai – I remember Darleen Greenwood and her sister Barbara. They lived on Autumn Ave. I lived on Hemlock St., corner of Etna Street from 1960 to 1968. Darleen, MaryAnn Santeramo and Maria Lepani could always be found together. They were inseparable. They also
“hung out” at Long’s Ice Cream Parlor and I knew them very well. In fact all three were at our wedding in 1968. I am so glad you mentioned the “Masone” family. I had that last name wrong (kept thinking it was Messino). I remember Sandy Masone – she was the “comedienne” of the group. Now I am wondering if I knew you, although your name does not ring a bell. My name back then was Fran Polimine. I have a younger brother Joe, who worked behind the counter at “Henry’s Deli” on the corner of Etna and Autumn. Did you go to PS 171?

I certainly did!! I have been viewing that site for quite a while now. In fact, I connected with someone I graduated with in 1964 – we now communicate weekly. Thanks!

I’m 60 years old and my husband is 62. Big age difference between you and us. Don’t know a Joe Bettinger, but small world, my husband lived at 252 Lincoln Ave. from 1960 – 1968. His name didn’t ring any bells with him either. Oh well. It is still fun corresponding with people from the “old neighborhood”.

The only Messina we remember is Sandy. I don’t recall her having a younger sister, but we could be wrong. I am pretty sure she did have a younger brother. I’m guessing you’re alot younger than I am – we moved to Woodhaven in 1968 and then to Suffolk County, L.I. in 1972 – been here ever since. The only name I recognized on this site was Robbie Dupree. I enjoy reading everyone’s comments alot.

This message is for Robbie Dupree (or as we knew him “Bobby” Dupree). I have seen your name a number times on this site and I am sure you are the same person we knew in the early sixties. My name is Fran (Polimine) Fleming. I lived on Hemlock St. and Richie Fleming (Lincoln Avenue) and I were married in 1968. We met at Long’s Ice Cream Parlor on Fulton Street back in 1962. I clearly remember you, along with Marianne Santeramo, Darleen Greewood and Maria Lepani. I think you lived on Autumn Ave., close to Sandy (Banana) Messina. If you are this person, we would love to hear from you. You probably remember Rich more than myself. Hope life has been treating you well. It was good to see your name on here. Best Wishes – The Flemings.

MVitale,

I had such fun reading your blog!! I’m new to this site and I can tell I’ll be having a good time reading about the good old days!! I lived on Hemlock St. in Cypress Hills from 1960 – 1968. Spent my teen years there – such fond memories. I graduated Maxwell HS in 1964 – judging from your photo you look alot younger than I am. I “lived” at Cypress Pool all summer long and “hung out” at Long’s Ice Cream Parlor. Acutally met my husband at Long’s. Kinda like “Happy Days! We’ve been married for 39 years now!!
Time flies doesn’t, it? Mopella

I lived on Hemlock St., corner of Etna St., from 1960 -1968. I remember summers at Cypress Pool and Long’s Ice Cream Parlor on Fulton Street. Such fond memories. I met my husband (39 years!) at Long’s. We had our first date in 1963 at Long’s, went to see “The Parent Trap” at the Embassy Theatre on Fulton Street and then to Furci’s Restaurant on Atlantic and Crescent St. for dinner. What a wonderful neighborhood that was. We also remember Robbie Dupree “hanging out” on Fulton Street. We called him Bobby back then. It was great to hear his voice on the radio back in the day. Hope life is treating him well. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
