i watched last in 1991 TERMINATOR 2 on the first saturday of its screening in malaysia. as i waited in the line for 30 mins, the bhai selling the tickets hung a sign LAST 2 TICKETS.i bought it. and the experience of watching it from the balcony/reserved class was unforgettable.

rex had the worst sound system until the DTS installed for JURASSIC PARK in 1993. i saw it 5 times. the first 2 times, i had to line up for 3 hrs. the line was so long. that was the indication of a well received film. GOONIES, TEMPLE OF DOOM, DUNE, LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, HEAT are just some of the great films i watched there. my last films i watched there were PHANTOM MENACE – 98, ATTACK OF THE CLONES – 02 and MINORITY REPORT (twice) – 02. as much as i complain about rex, the cineplexes of today are nothing compared to it. until the mid 90s, i used to frequent a video arcade opposite rex next to the Kentucky Fried Chicken. yep, those were the days.

i last watched in 1997 FIFTH ELEMENT 4 times and ANACONDA around may 97. i went overseas and upon my return in september, saw that cathay was already closed down. i even saw through the grilled door a poster for CON AIR. it was the best cinema in malaysia. the wide screen was unsurpassed and still is. the dolby stereo accentuated the sound coming from the film. it was an experience. the best memories were from the great films of the 80s – ALIENS, PREDATOR, DIE HARD, RETURN OF THE JEDI, EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. there was even an orange julius next to the cinema which closed down in the mid 80s. the opening trailer of cathay cinema mempersembahkan made all the bulu roma stick up. this was replaced by a dull light bulbed pavillion theatres mempersembahkan from 1992. but it did not spoil watching a great stallone flick like CLIFFHANGER. the music and sound remains in my memory. and the hand painted giant posters were wow..
