Note that Darlington still had 4 cinemas belonging to CMA (later Rank), namely the Odeon (Majestic) and Empire (both Odeons) and the Gaumont (Alhambra) and Arcade (Gaumonts). A third Gaumont house, the Court, had been destroyed by fire in 1947 when the film ‘The Brothers’ was the main attraction.

Miraculously, a theatre still exists in the town bearing the ‘Odeon’ name in spite of the addition of a nine - screen Vue a couple of years ago. This is none of the aforementioned venues, however, but the former ABC which appears on the page as the Regal.
