No the current library wouldn’t work out, simply because, according to Col. Plum’s will, the park district has first rights to that space if the library moves. And it is common knowledge the park district wants it for a fitness canter, which is an easy adaption.

Performance space would be very difficult to accomplish in that building. The fire chief doesn’t allow certain age children to go up and down stairs in large groups. We discussed this when talking about a small auditorium upstairs.

why start over when the theatre is accoustically perfect? The pipe organ asso is waiting to retool it back for a fabulous organ. The DuPage orchestra still wants it too.
I could go on and on about who will rent it. I have files full of groups, big and small.
The Ides of March will come back- they loved doing the concert in Lombard.
the theatre should be a theatre- that’s what it was made for.
We can’t get anywhere until the judge gives us our six months. Then people will start to come out to plan. Developers don’t want to ecrue the costs until they have some insurance of possiblity.

Duper, when we turned in the last packet of signatures- and don’t start telling me all the problems with it, it wasn’t for referendum so why stick to those rules.Referendum is only advisory anyways. Our point was, this is something everybody coming to/or living in Lombard wants. If the officials wanted verification, those should have had some value- but they didn’t.
We packed city hall over and over, year after year.
Duper, Deb Dynako and I have been trying to talk to people here for weeks now. “Work together” is what we are looking for.

Look how nice you boys are talking! It is fun to remember the childhood stomps. It would be funner to go back to them. In thr Dupe storefronts, we had a barber and a candy store- Ida Mae’s. It was an old fashioned soda shop too. This could easily be resaeached ans revived. The barber on Westmore would love to go there- the old guy that owned it trained him in the 70’s.
You know, if we lose this because its plaqued, any of the other buildings can go down even faster.
The only place we’ll see any of them is at the historic society achives- if that house is still standing.

No point in talking here anymore. You guys ruin any chance of dialog. Again, those that want to work together, contact Ms. Dynako.

Your comment, Challenger, on Sept. 13

Welcome back! Deb.
You must have been out fundraising!

You say you agree with Melders, like when he said the ‘friends’ should be partly held responsible AND that he didn’t agree with your current tactics (Scroll up 9 posts please).

Perhaps you should attempt this strategy: Because your group has burned way too many bridges, restoration of the theatre has a slim-to-none chance, and slim has walked out the door. The “friends” should step down, let Florey and Gron (pro-theatre trustees) appoint a new panel made up of new Lombard taxpaying residents, mix it up with people on both sides of the fence. No ex-friends! Put engineers, lawyers, Charlotte St. residents, construction people, artist, singers, whatever else, a mix of people.

Lay their simple agenda out for them, give them 30, 60, 90 (whatever) days to come up with a new plan, one that doesn’t rely so much on tax dollars. A plan that meets current code. If they come up with a solution, the theatre gets saved, if not then the inevitable happens. This strategy works. It gives the theatre one last chance, which it will not have with the current regime in place.

Face it, your group stinks. Six years of Egans dreadfully boring speeches, your unprofessional theatrics (asking and answering you own questions…please!), Alvarado’s threats of lawsuits, and Kramer’s silence speech. You ‘friends’ make me and everybody else in town chuckle. You have lost respect and now the theatre is doomed. You failed miserably, that’s a fact.

Drop your giant ego’s, quit blaming other people, and stop with the political threats. All one has to do is read your latest post and see what the ‘friends’ current agenda is….cover your own a*s, and find a fall guy.

Wow, Challenger! Way to avoid insults. And, by the way, who do you think the Foundation was? Exactly the group you described.
Your “solution” to start over with the, let’s see, 6th committee.2Ad-hocs, Art coalition, Friends, Foundation. I don’t think so. Your and your friends should be able to talk to us. Those four trustees slammed the door in our faces June 2.They haven’t answered e-mails, phone calls or anything that has to do with this.
Again, we would like to talk to those interested in coming up with SOLUTIONS not insults.
We’ve got the olive branch out-let’s do this.

Nothing but excuses and no solutions from both dude and challenger. The White Sox entries is exactly whatI’m referring to, Challenger. I was stunned to find you two bickering in any place possible. Rudeness and personal insults, comments about family members, etc. are never acceptable. Ask your mother, boys. How you both talk, hate is the only answer. Leave this site and let cooler heads prevail.
Dude, we decided not to do the petitions back then. We are working very hard on other solutions, including creating a development that should make everyone happy. What we are trying to do here is find out what will make everyone happy. That is the purpose of the Historical Commision's
6 mo review.

Dude, Stop it now. You are not helping anything, In fact, you are now a deterent to progress. If you stop e-mailing, the conflict will end for you.We heard you talk about the petitions and decided not to do it, as a committee. Quit this for your family’s sake. We may be able to patch this up.
Concerned and Challenger are no better. Challenger, your vile comments on the Voice are disgusting. Someone in your position should try to keep discussions at a higher level. Diapers and paperclips?
The reason I appeal to Dude is because he supports the restoration.
But I do not support his tactics.
Those of you that want to work on a compromise, contact Deb.

Those of you that insist on the personal attacks and inuendos seem to have no interest in coming to a compromise on this issue. That really is too bad for Lombard.
Those of us that want a united Lombard will work around you. It is destructive behavior of the worst kind. I agree with Ms. Dynako- please contact her if you really want to help!
Go to work on something that will help – we will all feel better!

Thanks Robert,
Thats why I asked people to go there to get all the info the Friends have and all the work they’ve done. Yes, those beautiful pictures are what keep us going. Can you imagine tearing it down for a multi-level parking lot? That was one of the “re-use” plans. Let’s park for the train and leave town. That will revitalize things!
Can you imagine bringing little children there for production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”, or having a vintage film festival, complete with a pipe organ player and vaudville acts? Or how about a rock concert put on by Jam Productions, who wrote a letter saying they would rent it 50 weeks a year? The problem is, the trustees don’t even listen to us anymore. They just don’t want the theatre there, for some reason. That reason is…… your guess is as good as mine.

Life-
I’ve been very busy the last few days because someone was trying to break into the theatre, and the village is too busy to repair the damages. It took them days to go over there and do it. We had to call the Fire Chief to get it done. So I patrolled the building myself, along with others. So far, we have had to beg them to repair anything since they have owned it, even with our own donation money.
We have done all the work the village has asked uo to do. Google DuPage Theatre and look up some unbiased news reports. You will also see some real delightful quotes from our classy trustees.
Gee, I guess I’m too busy saving a building to sit here blogging day and night, someone’s version of virtual activism. Check out our website that has loads of pictures and stories that shows hard working volunteers doing something wonderful for the community, not holding it back in 1962.
This is my last entry here. As I said, I’m too busy saving a theatre to stay here. However, I am going to PDF the report that shows the building paid for by proceeds on the property and other grant money , historic tax credits, etc.look on www.dupagetheatre.net in a few days. Our webmaster is getting married in a few weeks and it might take a little time to post it. It is a village acquired report published June 1,2005, a day before the demolition vote. This was after a meeting with the developer, offering to do anything he could to help get this done.
Too late? I guess that basket on the last second of the game doesn’t count either. It’s just how much we care, we keep working right up to minutes before the board meeting. You see, we have documents, they have rumors. Their rumors are so old they sound like fact.
Everytime I see the hate that is spewed from these discussions , it makes me very sad. My kids say if they posted some of these items, they would be suspended from school. My goodness, behavior worse than school kids!
Doesn’t sound like too many of you want a healed Lombard.
We still want a healed Lombard, with the theatre.

Taxpayer #2,
Typical banter-T is for tax. That’s what the TIF district is for-to fix blighted areas. And according to this chat, nothing could be more blighted. Where is the respect for history? Obviously way behind a priority to making the big bucks.RSC assumed the risk. But who would know that but the trustees that voted to demolish before the project went to the planning commission.
Our town will be less interesting, less beautiful, and less Lombard. Every useful and interesting older building that comes down makes us less unique. It takes more effort to have a vision. Tearing down and collecting money is the easy way. Why can’t we try to save Lombard?

4/3/2003 RFP FOR SOUTH PROPRTY “Provided we are selected to develop the south lot, RSC would like to propose that our team become the development manager on a pro-bono basis for the DuPage Theatre and shops redevelopment in order to align the total development and complete the entire project on a time sensitive and economical basis."
What development doesn’t use TIF when put in a TIF district? The village is paying for a waterpark with TIF.
The plan disturbs nothing in town as far as the public knows. Your Charlotte St. residents can get the setback they want. RSC will put effort into changing the plan any way it will work.
Too bad the village wouldn’t even look at the numbers after they came back to the table June 1 ! oops – then came June 2,. Too little too late? More like too much all at once, let’s cut bait with a demolition order. .
Wow, if risk was all that, the convention center is the abyss of risk!

The really sad part of all of this is that the big money was in town, and the village sent it away. I have followed this for many years and know all of the history. You cannot change the facts – I have the history on paper as it happened. RSC, who has been villified during this process, wanted to take this project on as a community member, not worrying about profit. The project was exciting, he wanted to work with Coffey and he liked the Foundation and Friends. He lives nearby.
History would have been made again. The two landmark experts working together on a landmark building.
Dance recitals and community theater? Sure! But after Jam Productions books the house, we might have to open up on Mondays to accomodate the community.
There is no reason why this project will not succeed.
This was the best development this town has ever seen. The thing is, I’m not sure why it is so important that this building comes down as long as someone is willing to take care of it. We have proven that we are dedicated.
What exactly is your plan anyways? Why can’t we work on something together?

Webmaster:
As a long-time DuPage Theatre supporter, I would like to request that the the message board for our beloved national landmark be shut down. This negative banter does not belong on your wonderful site- dedicated to preserving and remembering cinema treasures. Rather, I am requesting that those that wish to malign and insult others return to the website from which this argument started. I would prefer the DuPage be taken out in its entirety than watch this continue. This “dialogue” is counterproductive and will never help in resolving a local issue. I am embarrassed for Lombard!
