THE RENOWN THEATRE - Midland Junction Perth, Western Australia - Change of ownership

Gilbert Trefry Hands Over The Keys Of The “Renown Theatre Midland Junction” This article appeared in the West Australian Newspaper, Sat July 3, 1954 – It was also circulated as an AX4 leaflet during the same period. (refer to the image)

When Mr. Gilbert Trefry sees the last patron depart from “The Theatre Renown” on Saturday night, and as he closes the gates he will be severing a connection with the picture industry which began in Day Dawn 44 years ago. On Monday morning he will hand the keys to Bob Yelland of Consolidated Theatres Ltd, to whom he has leased the Renown. Bob Yelland was a Picture Show Man who lived well into his 90’s, after spending a life-time in the Cinema Industry. His interest in “The Renown” stemmed from the fact that he was running The Regent Theatre Guildford in the next suburb. It made a lot of sense to acquire “The Renown” for the purpose of switching film and sharing advertising. One of these releases was the very early CinemaScope production of “BENEATH THE 12 MILE REEF”. This was run at “The Renown” together with The Regent Guildford on the same nights. This writer was the assistant projectionist at “The Regent” while Bob Yelland’s son Kevin was the senior projectionist. I recall that we only had one set of CinemaScope lenses, and one print to service the two cinemas. We came very close to disaster on a number of occasions. as we rushed backwards and forwards with the spools.

Theatre name. “The Theatre Renown” – later known as “The Renown Theatre” then back to “The Theatre Renown” caused a lot of confusion as it switched backwards & forwards over the years. When you go back and look at the newspaper advertising there are constant instances of this. Never-the-less the theatre holds a special place for those who lived through the magic era of Picture Palaces – Contributed by Greg Lynch –
