Rand Cinemas was purportedly just five days away from launching the first of three multiplexes in Albuquerque late in 1989 when news traveled from some questionable dealings in Tennessee followed by Texas and then Arkansas that finally ended a wild business scheme by W.A. “Tony” Rand. Without funding for projection and burning bridges with film distributors, the theatre had no chance and had to wait a full year for Cinemark to operate as a discount house.
