After fitting most of their Sydney city and suburban theatres with a CinemaScope upgrade, the Hoyts installation team headed off to Newcastle, and later country areas. Here in the Newcastle Civic projection room - a few days before “The Robe” opened - we see Hilton Shepherd by a Gaumont-Kalee model GK21 35mm film projector (with a Kalee 4-track penthouse magnetic reproducer). The new Bausch & Lomb anamorphic unit (which stretches the ‘squeezed’ image) appears to have a Kalee backing lens. Thanks to Eric White for his assistance with this photo.
