The final curtain

Adelaide’s ‘Academy Cinema City’ was one of the city’s last few remaining movie theaters. Operated by the Wallis family, the Cinema was built in 1976 when the family purchased and refitted a large warehouse in the North Eastern corner of Hindmarsh Square.

Originally housing only two cinemas, it was expanded in 1980 with the addition of three smaller screens. The complex operated for over 30 years before the final curtain came down on August 8, 2007.

Demolition

Demolition was carried out over several months and the site cleared by early 2008. It is now home to the Crowne Plaza Hotel - Notes Urban Twilight
