Blue Moonlight Drive-In

Originally opened as the Galesburg Drive-In in 1949, this drive-in lasted until 1980 and had been operated by the Kerasotes chain. When its current owners purchased the property in the mid-1980’s, they initially used it for an antique tractor restoration business, but starting in 2004, the owners, the Carlsons, began a restoration of the long-shuttered drive-in.

After more than a year of hard work, the restoration and renovation of the outdoor theatre was completed, and as of early-August 2005, it had reopened. Renamed the Blue Moonlight Drive-In, this theatre featured first-run movies, a newly refurbished concession stand, a children’s playground, and free admittance for children under 12. It was closed on October 17, 2020.

I like their amazing snack shack. They serve a full menu and even have tables for a sit down meal. Their tenderloins cover the plate and I like to put ice cream on their home made pies and brownies!

During the weekends of June 2017, the Blue Moonlight’s four movies (all free) were: Split Decisions (1988), The Smurfs (1981), Rambo III (1988), and Jetsons: The Movie (1990).

All indications are this is a great place to visit, (I want one of those tenderloins!), but it should no longer be considered First Run.

By the way, the IMPAs listed the Galesburg through their final drive-in list in 1988. I know that the IMPAs were sometimes slow to notice closed theaters, but it would make me want to double-check that 1980 closure date.
