This is a 1999 article about the closing.

"Ladera Cinema fades to black after tonight's shows.

Albuquerque Tribune
Byline: Jason Gibbs

Pack away the popcorn machine the screens are going dark at the Ladera 6 Cinema on Albuquerque's West Side.

The last show at the $1 movie theater will be tonight, said a spokeswoman for Ladera's parent company, Silver Cinema.

The demise of the six-screen theater at 3301 Coors Blvd. N.W., leaves only two theaters that cater to the city's second-run movie fans. The Lobo Theater on Central Avenue and the Movies 8 on San Mateo Boulevard still offer cheap-seats movies on a combined total of nine screens.

"It was an economic decision. What you are seeing in Albuquerque is part of a nationwide trend. Anything that is not a mega-plex is going under," said Steve Holmes, marketing director for Silver Cinema.

Nationwide, Silver Cinema operates 105 theaters with a total of 540 screens. Of those, Holmes said, 40 are $1 theaters and most face the Ladera's fate.

Holmes said Silver Cinema plans to phase-out "most" of those 40 theaters as each location's lease runs out.

"A lot of theaters are shutting down. There's still a market for $1 (theaters), but its getting smaller," he said.

The Ladera changed its format from showing first-run movies at full-price to a dollar movie house in September 1991. At that time it was owned by Movie One Theaters in El Paso".
