Situated on Pushkin Square, one of the busiest squares in Russia, or even the world, Cinema Rossia was the Soviet Union's largest movie theater.

It opened in 1961. designed by a team of architects Sheverdayev, Godjeenskay and Solopov, the latter a renown cinema architect. Built as a 3-screen cinema, with 2,500 seats in the main auditorium (1,500 in the orchestra and 1,000 in the balcony) and two basement auditoriums each seating 200.

Karo Film, a new company, purchased and renovated the building in 1997 and reopened it as a Concert Hall. They later built the first multiplexes in the country and are now one of the main exhibitor chains. In 1997, the two basement screens were in use as a nightclub and restaurant.

The Cinema Rossia has been used as one of the main auditoriums of the Moscow International Film Festival, and is still the official location for it's ceremonies today.

Karo has had plans to revamp the theatre and turn it into a plex for quite some years and the government has forced them to do so, but so far they have failed to a degree as the mayor of Moscow halted the project. Karo still strives to restore it sometime in the future.
