Atrium Theatre

The Atrium Theatre was built in late-1952 as a CinemaScope theatre with balcony. In 1959 it was equipped for the presentation of Cinemiracle/Cinerama and 70mm projection. It opened with “Windjammer” in Cinemiracle using 3 Philips FP 30 projectors and 35mm perforated soundplayer from Philips. The equipment was rented from Cinerama at that time.

All the big roadshows were shown at the Atrium Theatre, running sometimes up to 90 weeks (like “Doctor Zhivago”). In the mid-1970’s the theatre was rebuilt into two screens. The orchestra was still running 70mm from the original projection booth, the balcony was the second auditorium. Later on other small auditoriums were made in the upper foyer and in the cellar.

The Atrium Theatre had a slightly curved screen of 15 meters and was closed around 1997. T was demolished and a small shopping place is on the site.

Always on the road from Balingen to Stuttgart on Sunday-mornings to experience the 70mm presentations of “Ben Hur”, “Dr. Schiwago” and “Lawrence of Arabia”, back in the mid-90’s. Unforgetable Movie-Experience.
