Architect Edward George de Wilde Holding 1886 – 1958 moved to Bournemouth in 1925 due to health reasons from his home town of Northampton with his Wife and Daughter Joan. Originally in partnership as Wallis & Holding Architects Bournemouth at Lansdown Road. It was while with Henry Wallis that he built his first cinema building the Victoria Super Cinema, Wimborne Road, Winton which was part of Victoria Parade, seating 800 opening January 22 1927. Holding left the partnership setting up in his own practice, eventually designing his first cinema the Savoy at Shaftesbury opening December 1933. The Moderne was to be Holdings fifth of eleven cinemas, opening on 11th October 1935. The Moderne was to be his finest and largest seating 1500 also the Moderne was to be the first by contractor Arthur Stanley Prince (Bournemouth) Ltd., he built for Holding, who was pleased with Prince’s work and engaged him for his following six cinemas, the last being the Wellesley in Wellington opening 12th July 1937. With the impending WW2 Holding and his family returned to his home town Northampton where he worked for the building department of Northampton War Agricultural Executive until 1950 when he retired. Holding died in 1958 survived by his Daughter Joan, his Wife having earlier predeceased him.
