Toronto’s Uptown Theater Closes Forever

On September 25 2003, just days after it was host to the Toronto International Film Fest, the Uptown closed its doors forever.

Open for over sixty years as a single screen theater and over thirty years as a three screen multiplex, the Uptown was a wonderful movie theater, with over 900 seats in the main theater and over 600 and 400 seats in 2nd and 3rd theaters, respectively.

I still remember when they closed the Backstage theater two years ago. The two had shared a backstage area, and one would enter the Backstage through the rear stage of the Uptown.

The Uptown will soon be demolished and turned into highrise condos. This great theater was a landmark for the people of Toronto and will be missed by all.
