Does anyone know what has happened to the huge Fox Oakland? The last time I saw it was in the 1980s – just sitting there empty, a block or so from the restored Paramount Oakland. This theater is not on Cinema Treasures list of Fox theaters. Has it been torn down? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
LDA.
[Ed — of course, the Fox Oakland is alive and kicking.]

The Fox Oakland is raising money for a major restoration. The marquee and vertical sign have already been restored as well as the outside lobby area. It has been closed for many years and there was major damage caused by water (mold and mushrooms on the carpets).

I took a tour of the Paramount in Oakland in Feb/March 2004 and the tour guide confirmed that the Oakland Fox is being acquired (or already has been) by the same group that is running the Paramount. He said that the restored Fox would have about 600 seats and be used for smaller venues. He also indicated that tours of the building would hopefully begin soon in order to raise awareness. Luckily it is still standing and has not been torn down.
