WILDWOOD, NJ — Good sources relate that the long-awaited razing of the former Hunt’s Shore (1939) and Blaker (circa 1900) theatres at 3500 Atlantic Avenue will begin shortly. The former Hunt’s offices were situated between the theatres. Vintage seats still remain in the Shore balcony and bottom portion of Blaker ground floor, condition at this point precarious. Projectors were said to still be up in Blaker but good luck getting up there.

The 1407 seat Shore Theatre opened on November 7, 1939 designed by the Philadelphia architectural firm of Thalheimer & Weitz. The theatre was twinned in January 1971 by closing off the balcony and dividing the auditorium into two screening rooms. The Blaker was later twinned and became part of the Shore Four.
If you haven’t been down there lately, many of the motels have bit the dust as well as long-standing restaurants and private homes. Its sickening. Much more is due to fall.
I hear they are going condo city there. It also sucks that they are knocking down this theater. I was imminate that a diaster was coming when Frank’s Theaters purchased the chain from Hunt’s. The first year they twined the Blaker, Ocean and quaded the Strand ruining all 4 theaters. I am not sure what happened but they went out of business and were purchased by Hoyts. I know they are back in business.
Was down this past weekend and saw the “pile”. The PVC is on it’s way!!!
I was in Wildwood this past summer (aug 2007) and could not believe my eyes!!! Where once the hugh and beautiful Shore theatre stood is now nothing more than an empty dirt field. I guess Wildwood is going to join all the other shore towns up and down the Jersey coast by letting all the grand palaces of yesterday be swallowed up by ugly sheetrock condo’s!!!!! What a shame.
