EverGreene Painting Studios, Inc. in WALLS & CEILINGS!

January 2005 – Cover Story on the Bob Hope (Fox) Theater in Stockton, California by Kim Lovejoy, VP of Restoration, EverGreene Painting Studios.

A NEW HOPE. After years of planning, design and construction, the newest “star” in Stockton’s downtown revitalization efforts is a monument to community spirit and a work of art in itself. Lights on.

I’ve been told that EverGreene is run and was founded by a renegade former employee of the famous Conrad Schmitt studios outside of Milwaukee (who have artistically restored hundreds of theatres and other buildings), and that they taught him everything he knows, but that the results of EverGreene’s work is nowhere up to Conrad Schmitt’s standards and specifications.

Anyone know if any of this is true?

Jim:

No, I would have to say that none of the above is true. I would be curious as to your source of misinformation.

I started Evergreene about 30 years ago, right after graduating from the Art Institute of Chicago and long before I had ever heard of Conrad Schmitt, for whom I have never worked. As to the quality of our work and/or the quality of any other studio’s work, I would have to say let the projects and the satisfaction of the clients speak for themselves.

Sincerely,
Jeff Greene, President
EverGreene Painting Studios, Inc.

Well, I for one will be happy to speak for the high quality of Evergreene’s work. Recently, they completed the restoration of the grand lobby ceiling of the Golden State Theatre in Monterey, California, a theatre with which I have been a volunteer. The job is fantastic. Check it out for yourself at www.goldenstatetheatre.com
I have been doing volunteer decorative painting elsewhere in this same theatre, and by observing what the craftspeople from Evergreene were doing, gained additional inspiration which has improved the quality of what I—and several other volunteers—have been accomplishing. All of us connected with the Golden State Theatre heartily commend Jackie, Walter, and Suzie for their professionalism and friendliness throughout their involvement in the project. Note: I am gainfully and happily employed as an architectural art glass designer, and have no plans whatsoever to run off and start my own decorative painting company with knowledge I gained by observing the folks from Evergreene. :–) While our business has provided etched glass to the Golden State Theatre on a professional basis, my painting involvement is as a volunteer.

I am glad that Messrs. Greene and Parks have set the record straight; it is nice to have this “misinformation” corrected. When I heard this some years ago from a source I don’t remember, I had taken it with a grain of salt, but had always wondered if there was a bit of truth there. Apparently it originated from a competitor or other disgruntled one. I hope EverGreene’s achievements long continue — especially if they involve restoring our theatres!

Even though Gary has pretty well said everything above, the lobby of the Monterey Golden State Theatre is magnificently restored thanks to the efforts of Evergreene. Our lobby started a sudden and dramatic self-destruction last December. You would never know anything was ever wrong with the space. I cannot speak highly enough of the work Jackie and Walter did on this.

What was particularly appreciated was the total lack of “attitude” on behalf of the workers. They were very helpful in many different
facets of the painting work for the volunteers on the Golden State project. I cannot speak highly enough of the efforts of the Evergreen folks.

Jim-
Having been an employee of Jeff Greene’s EPS on 12 projects, I can assure you that comments about his being a renegade interloper are not true. The only person who may believe the comments about his being a renegade are the ones whispering those things to who’ll ever listen. I personally can assure you that the man has a passion for excellence that’s unsurpassed. His knowledge and passion for the restoration craft are matched only by the patience and expertise he passes on to his employees.
As for Standards of Excellence, Jeff Greene and EPS are light years ahead of all competition. I know this as fact because I’ve also worked for his competitors.
“An artist creates beauty through the manifestation of art, architecture and music.
A true artist sells it”.
Jeff Greene is a true artist.

Re. my above Thanks to the Evergreene folks who worked at the Golden State Theatre in Monterey: I meant SHERRY, not Suzie…a momentary mental lapse…sorry Sherry! :–)
