CHICAGO, IL — The 3 Penny Cinema closed last night.
The theatre had money troubles for years and with high taxes have forced it to close.
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift opened on June 16th, and the theater also had ‘Art School Confidential’ plus ‘Friends with Money’.
But last night, Thursday June 22nd, the owner just closed the theater.

What is your source? There are stickers on the windows indicating the city licensing dept shut them down effictive June 20, and their website says it is a temporary closing. However the Burrows do have a history of abrupt closings.
It looks like the CinemaTreasures page for this theatre is gone, too. Any idea why?

The site appears to be having problems today. I can reach the homepage but not any of the individual theater web-pages. When I click on a theater link I’m taken back to the homepage. It’s been doing this on and off for a few days now.
The thing with the city was like the topper. The 3 Penny was to close last year. Than it was wait for summer. They then wanted to see how the Holiday season did. They then wanted to close it about a month or so ago. They wanted to go on a month to month bases to see how the summer did.The thing with the city was it and 3 Penny went dark. The “Temporary Closing” is to see if they can get some backers or help from someone with money.
The owners have NO REAL PLANS TO REOPEN THE 3 PENNY CINEMA, UNLESS THEY GET A LOT OF CASH . EVEN WITH THAT THE THEATRE DID NOT DO WELL ENOUGH FOR ALOT OF MONEY TO BE PUT INTO BY A “BACKER” so
The 3 Penny ’s fate is very dark and the booking for this week was to be June 23 – June 29
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift @ 6,8:15 (S/S 3:15)
United 93 @ 7:15 (S/S 2:40, 5:00)
Art School Confidential@ 9:20
3 Penny’s next “big movie” was to be
You, Me and Dupree on July 14th
CINEMA TOUR NOW HAS IT AS CLOSED
I’m sorry to see the 3Penny close down. I hated the theatre, though. It was such a dive. I did not like the way it was designed, and it always seemed dirty and sticky. The screen was posted at an odd place on the wall. That being said, the 3Penny always had good Midnight movies back in the 70’s when the Biograph (which was worlds more classy) accross the street was playing the Rocky Horror Picture Show. The 3Penny always had the great location in it’s advantage. At Lincoln, Halsted, and Fullerton. Back in the day, there was a F.W.Woolworths on the corner, and that cool alley that wrapped around the theatre was a good hang out spot.
Does any one know if it is for lease or sale? we are looking for some more theate4rs, thanks
Does any one what they plan on doing with the building of the 3 Penny Cinema? Considering it’s historical significance in the community, it would be a shame if it was to be torn down.
