TV news story on AMC Orleans closure & nearby Philadelphia cinemas

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Watch a TV news clip of former Philadelphia movie houses! The AMC Orleans 8 opened as a single screen cinema showplace in Northeast Philadelphia in 1963 with reportedly the largest screen in Philadelphia.

TV Fox 29 reported on the closure of the Orleans last night, and showed what’s left of the exteriors of other former Northeast Philly single screen moviehouses- the Tyson, Castor, Benner, Devon (which will reopen for live shows), and the Mayfair. Those theaters were Art Deco and opened in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Watch the clip here.

I saw the clip (both directly on Fox 29, as well as on the Fox 29 website) and I was moved.

I heard the place was on the way out here on this site a couple years ago and I called a buddy in NE Philly to inquire and he told me that the theater was still open but now it’s finally gone… the theater wasn’t as nice as it used to be and in the last twenty years there had been at least one murder just outside the theater 13 years ago or so; car thefts were fairly common… still, the Orleans is clearly where I saw the most pictures. Very sad to see it all go so fast….. I’ll have to get back to NE Philly one of these days.
