ROANOKE, VA — A young man is trying to get a local theater built the hard way by collecting signatures to submit to Carmike Cinemas.
A young Roanoke man has petitions across Randolph County in hopes of getting a movie theatre to come back to Roanoke.
Michael Fielder, 22, said he spoke with a representative of Carmike Cinemas who advised him to get signatures, get the city’s approval and call them back. The representative did not say how many signatures were needed, so Fielder set his goal at 2,000.

Shouldn’t this story be tagged as coming from Roanoke, Alabama, not Virginia? Roanoke, VA already has a Carmike.
Michael, what a wonderful idea you’ve come up with. I truly hope that your petition works.
Perhaps you should clearly remind all of the store owners that cinemas and theaters bring people into that part of town and they, like your proposed cinema(s), will reap the benefits of patrons both ways. You further need to get your plans aired on all of the local television stations!!!
And what about you approaching Carmike’s corporate offices and asking them to hire you to be trained as a future manager?
GOOD LUCK young man… go for it!
Yes good luck.
Virginia has several Carmike Cinemas, including one that just opened up near Washington,DC.
Check out the site at www.carmike.com
I know there are some in Virginia: Roanoke, Charlottesville,
Lynchburg, Danville, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads, and Richmond and as far as South Hill, Danville and Fredericksburg.
I thought CARMIKE bought old theatres To close. He won’t see a Carmike theatre there.Too bad GCC isn’t around.
if you want a new theatre to open in your home town i can help with my expierences please email me at with zipcode of the location. thank you ram cinemas
Chains build theatres based on marketing studies of age demographics, area income, employment, population, competition and complimentary retail. They then present a report to the bankers who will green light the financing. No chain in their right mind would start with a petition.
Cities approve projects based on projected size, footfall, traffic projection, public transport, impact on nearby residents, parking facilities, noise pollution, etc. They would only license a credible operator at a specific location.
Sounds like someone at Carmike gave this guy the brush off.
Who would want a Carmike Cinema in their town? We couldn’t wait till ours finally closed down….
“Sounds like someone at Carmike gave this guy the brush off.”
It does in a way, but if you read the full story the town’s mayor has signed the petition which now has over 3000 signatures. Still unlikely for all the reasons others have posted. I still give Fielder credit for at least trying to do something positive for his community.
BTW, it’s Roanoke, ALABAMA: View link
