Carmike to purchase Atlanta-area chain
According to the Ledger Enquirer, Carmike is taking over the small Georgia chain, MNM Theatres. It shoudn’t be that rough of a transition though as the leading MNM executive will still operate them for at least the next five years and Carmike will pay to convert all their screens to digital.

UltraStar Cinemas executive sets stage before movie starts
In an interview in the Press-Enterprise, Damon Rubio, EVP of Operations for UltraStar Cinemas, discusses changes in the moviegoing experience. Unlike many major theater chains, UltraStar is finding success in refurbishing older multiplexes.
Well what happens is the little six-plex or eight-plex down the road is a pit, it’s not maintained, no one’s watching it. Over time, on the books, it looks like that theater is not making any money. So they shed it, they get rid of it. Well the reality is, that theater could be very profitable if someone just paid attention to it, gave it love and care. And that’s where our company comes in.

Erbil to open new theaters in 2012
Erbil Cinemas has made a commitment to build 30 new cinemas in Iraq. They’ll mostly show Hollywood films but could provide a venue for more local filmmakers to find an audience.

Columbia teams up with foursquare for movie promotion
One of the more interesting promotional tie-ins I’ve seen lately. Columbia is forming an alliance with foursquare for the marketing of their upcoming film, “30 Minutes or Less”. For those not familiar with the mobile app foursquare, users “check-in” wherever they go to receive points and tell friends where they are. With this promotion, users that check-in at movie-related locations could win extra prizes.
