Photographer ’s project aims to capture “the beauty of projectors and portraits of the people who run them before they’re gone forever ”
NEW YORK, NY — New York City-based photographer Joseph O. Holmes is working on a project called “The Booth” where he captures images of projectionists all over the Northeast. The aim to accurately detail the atmosphere of these people and the rooms they work in before this craft fades away with digital projection.

Regal acquires Great Escape Theatres
The biggest chain in the country just got bigger with Regal acquiring Great Escape Theatres. In total, they’ll be increasing their portfolio by 301 screens across 25 theaters.

Cinemark signs deal to buy Rave Cinemas
Cinemark is expanding its reach again with is purchase of Rave Cinemas over the weekend. After Carmike purchased 16 of their screens last month, Cinemark is now buying everything else from the chain that reportedly brought in $228 million in revenue last year.
What will be the next chip to fall in this season of consolidation?

Digital Cinema Destinations may be eyeing acquisition of Clearview
Bud Mayo at Digital Cinema is interested in purchasing the mainly suburban Northeast chain, Clearview Cinemas. He actually founded the chain in 1994 before selling it to Cablevision five years later. He’s now looking to expand his brand and with only ¼ of the screens converted to digital, Cablevision has been looking for a buyer.

Ritz Theater turns to the community for funds and consideration as a not-for-profit in order to survive
MUNCY, PA — After almost 90 years in business, the Ritz Theatre is in danger of closing because it can’t afford to make a digital conversion. They’re hoping to raise money to become a non-profit so they can use other donations to purchase the equipment.

Cinemark buys sixteen theaters from Rave
Carmike is aggresively expanding with a goal of growing to 300 theaters nationwide. They recently purchased 16 theaters from Rave with most being leaders in their market.

Overland Park-based Dickinson Theatres seeks bankruptcy reorganization
OVERLAND PARK, KS — Low attendance and the expense of digital conversion is leaving Dickinson Theatres filing for bankruptcy. The 92-year-old company is reorganizing so they can prepare their business better for the future.

NYC theaters protest ban on super-size sugary drinks
NEW YORK, NY — A battle is heating up in New York between theater owners and the city over a ban on large sugary drinks. Due to the fact that theaters make more profits on concessions than anywhere else, a ban could lead to higher ticket prices.

Theater operators not planning on raising ticket prices for 48 fps showings of “The Hobbit”
Moviegoers can breathe a sigh of relief as exhibitors aren’t expected to raise prices for 3-D 48 fps showings of “The Hobbit”. The number of theaters that will debut this technology will be minimal and the debate will rage on about the value of it.

Director supporting efforts to maximize number of 70mm showings of ‘“The Master” across the country
Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film “The Master” is being released next month and he’s stepping up to encourage cinemas to show it in 70mm. It’s unclear how many will follow suit and if the studio will truly push this but he’s hoping.
