Without new projector, Cinema Center imperiled
FORT WAYNE, IN — Local art-house favorite, the Cinema Center is facing closure if it cannot raise $50,000 for a digital projector. They’re still in business but of course have had a tougher time getting programming in the past year. No concrete fundraising plan is in place but they hope to have a new projector this summer.

CNN recently did a story on how the cinema experience has changed with digital projection. They went across the country and visited cinemas of various sizes to see what the impact has been. While conversion costs are high, digital has provided an undeniable flexibility.

Former NY Movie Palaces
NEW YORK, NY — They may still be standing but just as shells of their former selves. Flavorwire looked at 19 NY movie palaces that have been adaptively reused such as the Paramount and the Oriental.

Community groups scramble after Portage Theater closes
CHICAGO, IL — In the wake of the Portage Theater closing, its former tenants are looking for new spaces. No word on the future of the theatre though and where it’s at in acquiring a liquor license.

Will Broadway finally be Brought Back?
LOS ANGELES, CA — The Delijani Family, owners of the Los Angeles, Tower, State and the Palace Theatres, have announced plans that they’re attempting to get permits to open restaurants and bars in each of their theaters. The exact plans and costs haven’t been announced but they essentially will leave the auditoriums intact and build these establishments in basements and patios.

How many trailers is too long?
Building on the talk a few months back about theaters charging studios to run trailers, there is now talk amongst NATO to limit trailers to 2 minutes. Theater owners as well as patrons have voiced concerns over the growing length of the pre-show. There’s discussion as well on how far in advance of release trailers can run.

SF’s Coronet remembered
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — 36 years down the road, the Coronet Theatre is still synonymous with “Star Wars”. Even though it was demolished in 2007, the memories still linger on from local fans.

Saenger set to come back better than ever
NEW ORLEANS, LA — The restoration of the Saenger Theatre is coming closer to completion as it moves towards and October re-opening to present “Book of Mormon”. They’re sparing no expense as they painstakingly recreate the look of the theatre from its 20’s heyday.

Community puts movie theater in digital age
EATONVILLE, WA — The Roxy’s call for help has been answered as the community came together to raise $34,000 for digital equipment. The owners have contributed the rest and the new projector was already in place for the Memorial Day Weekend.
