    Remembering Cinerama (Part 23: Minneapolis)

    REMEMBERING CINERAMA
    Part 23: Minneapolis

The following is Part Twenty-three in a series of retrospectives on Cinerama, the legendary motion picture process that kicked off the widescreen revolution. The series focuses on providing a market-by-market, film-by-film, historical record of when and where Cinerama and its multi-panel clones were exhibited. The easy-to-reference articles also serve to provide nostalgia to those who experienced the Cinerama presentations when they were new and to highlight the movie palaces in which the memorable events took place.

  • Science on Screen at the Coolidge Corner Theatre Presents “Night of the Living Dead”

BROOKLINE, MA — Science on Screen at the Coolidge Corner Theatre takes a dark twist with a presentation of “Night of the Living Dead”, George A. Romero’s 1968 genre-defining zombie horror film on Monday, April 13 at 7:00 pm. This unusual program is the “brainchild” of psychiatrist Steven C. Schlozman, a self-described zombie film fanatic and pop culture enthusiast who will join us before the film to explore the theoretical neuroscience of zombies and the psychological effects they have on others.

What would the brain of a zombie look like? Why are zombies so (physically) unbalanced? Why are they always hungry? Why do normal people, in the absence of being infected, descend to sub-cortical zombie behavior in almost every zombie movie? And just what is it about the concept of the living dead that continually fascinates audiences? Zombie fans will have lots to chew on…

  • Loew’s Jersey call for restoration volunteers - Saturday, March 21

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Even as our season of classic films and other events continues, Friends of the Loew’s is moving forward with a number of volunteer projects to improve our Loew’s Jersey Theatre.

    So, this coming Saturday …

For weeks, several FOL volunteers have been working to remove decades of old bubble gum from more than two thousand metal seat parts from the Loew’s balcony. It may not sound very glamorous, it is nevertheless very important. Now, the next step is to disassemble those parts. All of this is in preparation for re-painting those parts, re-installing the seats and — FINALLY! — reopening the Loew’s balcony! We need three people to use pneumatic wrenches (the kind you see in auto-repair shops) to remove the bolts and disassemble the parts. It’s not really hard, and no special skills are needed. Come join the Balcony Team at the Loew’s!

Group forms to help neglected RKO Keith’s

FLUSHING, QUEENS, NY — Flushing’s Landmark RKO Keith’s Theatre is once again in the spotlight, an amazing, 23 years after its closure. This is the result of a bursting of the real estate bubble and the formation of a grassroots organization “Friends of the RKO Keith’s Flushing,” which managed to gather an also amazing 1,000+ membership in the first week of its conception.

Formed one short month ago, on the initiative of former Flushing resident and RKO neighbor, Ed Tracey. The group has tapped into a wellspring of interest, extending beyond Flushing’s boundaries, to include former residents and many others, who have attended graduations, dance classes, concerts or saw classic films at the theatre, in addition to current residents who see the potential of this venue. All this suggesting that the former show palace represents something much more than just another inert landmark.

The building located at 135-27 Northern Boulevard, Flushing Queens is now for sale again after the failure by the current owner to develop the site as a 19 story luxury condominium. Faced with the reality of a lasting and depressed real estate market, the survival of any developer is questionable and the sale of this property at a profit is extremely unlikely. Flushing may be left holding a foreclosed property, with little to show for those 23 years of vacancy.
