A look back at Baghdad moviegoing

A piece in the Kansas City Star recounts one man’s memories of going to the movies in Baghdad.

Husham al-Kanani practically grew up in a Baghdad movie theater, watching films at the cinema his father managed.

Al-Kanani relives that time only in brief moments. He walks into the few remaining Baghdad movie theaters, buys a ticket and imagines the nonstop showings when the city’s cinema scene thrived.

Fabulous Fox Oakland to reopen February 5, 2009

OAKLAND, CA — After its closing as a movie venue in 1972 the Fox Oakland faced the same threat as many comparable movie palaces. It was scheduled to be demolished in favor of a parking lot in the 1980s. In the 1990s it was scheduled to be sliced up into several smaller theatres. Dedicated preservationists who realized the importance of the theatre rallied to save it at every step and finally, after 20+ years, it has finally been brought back to its original spectacular condition and is scheduled to officially reopen February 5, 2009.

Bill Graham productions has leased the theatre for the next year and will present live venues only. There are no present plans for any film venues at the theatre.

To see over 100 photographs of the theatre before, during and after its renovation go to the following site: http://www.nbphoto.com/#mi=2&pt=1π=10000&s=14&p=0&a=0&at=0 Once there click new then click Fox Theatre. You won’t be disappointed. The restored theatre is amazing.

    REMEMBERING CINERAMA
    Part 17: Vancouver

The following is Part Seventeen in a series of retrospectives on Cinerama, the legendary motion picture process that kicked off the widescreen revolution. The series focuses on providing a market-by-market, film-by-film, historical record of when and where Cinerama and its multi-panel clones were exhibited. The easy-to-reference articles also serve to provide nostalgia to those who experienced the Cinerama presentations when they were new and to highlight the movie palaces in which the memorable events took place.

  • Paterson Cinema News

Unofficial word is that Paterson NJ will have a cinema again soon.

On February 11, 2005, the local Herald News wrote about the City Council’s approving a new downtown development – Center City Paterson. The 320,000 square foot retail and entertainment center fills an entire city block located between Smith, Ward Main and Clark Streets. The article referenced that a cinema would be part of the development. www.centercitypaterson.com

The outside of the building is almost finished and cars are already parking in a well lighted underground lot while interior construction continues. A NJ Exhibitor says its supposed to be an 8-plex (not 10 reported in ‘05 article). Official news is supposed to come in January including name and target opening date.

    Marcus down quite a bit

MILWAUKEE, WI — Marcus Corp. is reporting a 69% drop for the second quarter, but not because of their theaters, they say.

Marcus Corp. said Thursday that investment losses, along with a write-down on a Las Vegas condominium hotel development, were the major reasons behind a 69.1% drop in its second-quarter net income.

But the Milwaukee company’s theaters continue to pack in moviegoers, even as its hotels are hit by declines in business and leisure travelers.
