Auburn’s Old State Theater to close, but….

AUBURN, CA — Here’s an unusual situation. According to this article the Old State Theater is or will shortly close (the theater’s website indicates Dec. 5 though the article says Dec. 20). The theater will be transformed into a performing arts center. However the current operator has copyrighted the theater’s name and intends apparently to use it as the name of her relocated cinema.

The Old State Theater, a haven for art-house films in Downtown Auburn, will close its doors Dec. 20 as an art deco movie house it has called home since opening in mid-2004.

Owner Theresa Cote said Friday that she has decided to move to a new location to let building owner the Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center non-profit move forward with plans to modify the Lincoln Way theater for live performances.

Cote, who has copyrighted the Old State Theater name, said she is looking for a building in the Auburn area with about 3,400 square feet of floor space and good parking access to re-establish her movie business. She owns the projection equipment and screens at the theater.

SARASOTA, FL — SunStar will close the Sarasota Crossings 10 on December 14. SunStar took over the theater from the Regal chain in 2002.

The managers found out several weeks ago that the theater at 5521 Fruitville Road, at the Honore Avenue intersection, will close, and the other employees were informed this week.

Lucas said the employees have been told that the theater is closing to make room for a big box store.

    Boyd Theatre: Carpets to return!

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Friends of the Boyd are excited to share with you color drawings of the gorgeous CARPETS that were made for the Boyd Theatre when it opened in 1928, and will again be woven for the movie palace IF the restoration project begins again! We had black and white photos of the original carpets, but colors had to be determined.

In the auditorium and adjoining foyers in 1928, was a beautiful carpet with a French Art Deco design in an ORGANIC pattern. Its colors were found from a surviving piece discovered in 2005 underneath a concession stand serving the balcony. Architects Martinez & Johnson redeveloped the carpet so it can return to the Boyd!

I am trying to find some source that would provide me with every film title and date that would have played in these cinemas. I am trying to go through microfishe at a local library but this is almost mind numbing in it’s antiquity. If there is anyone who may have suggestions on how to do this, please contact me either at the group or at – many thanks. PS: These were mostly General Cinema theatres!

  • New owner needs help with projector

I am a new theatre owner, and we have a Brenkert BX 60 projector in the booth. It has not been running in 8 or 9 months. I am wondering what’s the best way to get it back into action? This projector worked fine before the theatre was closed.

This theatre is in Wisconsin. Any suggestions of people or companies in WI or MN who might be able to troubleshoot with me if I have problems?

    Thanks!
