Fox Oakland hoping for October return

OAKLAND, CA — After many years of work, this might be the year when the Fox Oakland reopens its doors.

Call it what you will, but the curtain is set to rise on the old-time movie palace — once the largest theater on the West Coast — 38 years after the last images flickered across its screen.

Oct. 26 is the target date to rekindle some of the old-time glamour and magic, 80 years nearly to the day after the picture palace opened its doors.

In this reincarnation, the Fox will be filled with live entertainers instead of talking pictures.

  • Oscar Night America celebrates 15 years

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced they will be continuing the annual tradition of Oscar Night America with formal viewing parties around the U.S. to benefit charities.

On Sunday, February 24, charities in 52 cities will host official Oscar telecast viewing parties during the 80th Academy Awards ceremony as part of Oscar Night America, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' grassroots outreach program.

The Academy sanctions charities across the country to host celebratory viewing parties on Oscar Night, with proceeds directly benefiting the charities. All parties will feature the live broadcast of the Awards presentation; many will integrate Hollywood style party elements, including red-carpet arrivals, local celebrities, “paparazzi” photographers, predict-the-winner contests and live entertainment.

    New Theater Editing Policy

In order to improve the consistency and quality of Cinema Treasures, we have crafted a new editing policy for the site.

If you’re submitting new theaters or adding information to existing theaters, you should definitely take a moment to read the policy. And your suggestions are welcome, too. Please post any comments, questions, or suggested additions to this thread.

It is worth noting, of course, that we will do our best to retroactively edit our nearly 20,000 listings, but this will be a long process.

    Thank you,

    Cinema Treasures

    Vienna theater allows dogs

VIENNA, AUSTRIA — Someone should tell all these theaters in the U.S. leaping hurdles to obtain alcohol permits that there is another route to new customers. Check out what they’re doing at the Admiral Theatre.

A movie theater in Vienna has opened its doors to dogs for daily shows people can enjoy in the company of their pets, a spokesman said.

The Admiral cinema used to have “dog days” only once a month to compete with larger theaters, but has begun hosting them daily because of their popularity, the Mirror reported Wednesday.

  • Local residents save Oaks Theater

OAKMONT, PA — This story in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review highlights some Pennsylvania theater success stories along with some history of moviegoing in the area.

When an opportunity to buy the movie theater she used to frequent as a child came up six years ago, Meg Burkardt and two friends jumped at the chance.

Burkardt, Cyndi Yount and Marc Serrao, all of Penn Hills, bought the Oaks Theater in Oakmont with one goal in mind: preserving a dying breed.

“This is definitely a labor of love,” Burkardt said.
