Landmark designation hearing for San Francisco’s Metro Theatre

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco’s Metro Theatre showcases both 1924 Spanish Colonial design and Art Deco remodel, yet has been closed since 2006. The San Francisco Landmarks Board will consider landmark status for the Metro Theater on Wednesday, February 6 at 12:30 pm in Room 400, City Hall. The Metro item is #14 of a 14-item agenda so it will be later in the afternoon. If you can attend, please do so. If not, consider emailing the Board. Click here for more info and you can view Landmark Nomination Photos and read the Landmark Nomination Report.

The nomination incorporated renovation photos that Ken Roe and I linked to Cinema Treasures, which shows the great importance that this website serves, and how important it is to publicly share theater photos (historic, renovation, and current).

  • “Milk” Filming Benefits the Castro

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Filming of Gus Van Sant’s upcoming biopic, Milk, has recently begun on location around San Francisco, including in the Castro neighborhood, which the film’s production team has transformed parts of to appear as they did in the early 70s. The film is about the first openly gay elected official in America, Harvey Milk, called “The Mayor of Castro Street”, who was assasinated along with Mayor George Moscone by Dan White in 1978. Van Sant has shot at locations connected to Milk including his camera shop on Castro Street (now a gift shop), City Hall, and the historic Castro Theatre.

The production, partnering with a local business association and the Castro Theatre’s owners, gathered funds to repair the neon on the marquee and also repaint the facade of the theater. Location manager Jonathan Shedd said, “There’s very few chances in our business where we can have a chance to make a postive change. But it’s nice to know that when we leave here, we’re going to leave something that’s had a lasting impact”.

The film stars Sean Penn as Harvey Milk and Josh Brolin as Dan White. Also starring in Milk are Emile Hirsch, James Franco, and Victor Garber.

  • LA’s Broadway to get $36.5 million revitalization makeover

LOS ANGELES, CA — City officials had a press conference Monday to formally announce a major push to revitalize Broadway in downtown Los Angeles.

The $36.5 million “Bringing Back Broadway” plan announced Monday envisions the street as a bustling neighborhood of entertainment venues, small shops and residential units behind restored facades of intricate stone work and looming statuary.

“Our vision is to bring back Broadway to its heyday,” said City Councilman Jose Huizar, whose district includes the area. “It’s a shame that we allowed it to get to its current state, that we neglected it so much.”

Huizar and other supporters see Broadway as the thread that could stitch together other major development projects undertaken as downtown’s residential population swelled from about 18,700 in 1998 to more than 28,900 in 2006.

The structure was added to the building in 1940, but it hadn’t been lit-up since the early 1990s. While the marquee itself was OK, the awning was beyond repair.

Tearing the structure off the building revealed four stained glass windows. The round windows depict four of the nine Muses of Greek mythology. They were crafted by Northwest artist Ray Nyson, The Olympian newspaper reports.
