    Theater name in Brookyln

I grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn on the edge of East Flatbush 3 blocks away from Rockaway Parkway and Church Avenue. I remember there was a movie theater on Church Avenue and East 94th Street but it is not listed on your website and I forgot the name. I hope that someone remembers the name of this theater.

  • Texas Theater restorers seeking info on King Studios of Dallas

SEGUIN, TX — The Seguin Conservation Society poised to begin restoration of the Spanish-Colonial, atmospheric Texas Theatre. Original construction began on The Texas in 1929, and it opened in 1931. W. Scott Dunne was the architect and news articles from the grand opening say the interior was designed by King Studios of Dallas.

We are seeking information on other theaters that were decorated by King Studios. Any leads would be appreciated.

  • Information on value of 1936 fight 35 mm film

I recently bought 3 reels in original wooden shipping boxes of the joe Louis vs. Max Schmelling fight in 1936 at Yankee Stadium in New York. The fight went 12 rounds and Schmelling won. They are in great condition. I am trying to find out what these reels are worth.

    Thanks for any information,
    Gary

  • Talk intensifying over Vicksburg cinema

VICKSBURG, MS — Something is going on within the city of Vicksburg all of sudden. During the summer, the talk of a new cinema died down. Now the talk around town has started again. I’ve been trying to track down what it’s all about but so far—nothing. I had two sources who verified the talk part. But something is going on.

Second former Alderwoman Gertrude Young who frequently adds her commentary on the Live local talk show, “Live from the Klondike,” has frequently been bragging the fact that she has been in touch with new cinema investors. On the last one I heard, she spoke of cinema subsidiary Viacom Inc. I found out that would be Odeon Cinemas in the Northeast. I learned too that Odeon Cinemas wouldn’t open a cinema in this part of the country.

All of sudden she’s dropped off the radar screen on the subject. One more thing: people and I suspect tourists as well are wondering why the city of Vicksburg, with a population of 25,000 doesn’t have a cinema. But talk is increasing and growing.

    Interesting eh?

    NuWilshire to close next week

SANTA MONICA, CA — The NuWilshire Theatre, rumored to be closing for months, looks like it finally shut its doors next Thursday. Supposedly, it is not Landmark, its operator, that wants to do this but its owner, who plans to convert the site to retail.

Another theater is going dark. Landmark is leaving the NuWilshire in Santa Monica, though it seems the chain wanted to stay but was kicked out by an owner intent on developing the site.

  • West Seattle movie house to be grand again

WEST SEATTLE, WA — No longer on the endangered theaters list, the Admiral Theatre is undergoing renovations to restore murals and make it an attractive venue for concerts as well as films.

For those who’ve lived in West Seattle in the past 60 or so years, the Admiral is faded, but still cherished — even as sprouting condominiums change the flavor of the neighborhood around the theater at California Avenue Southwest and Southwest Admiral Way.

But as the rest of the neighborhood marches forward, the theater is trying to return to its roots. The manager of the theater, Steve Garrett, wants to bring it back to its old glory and quirkiness. He plans to apply for grants and raise money to pay for the renovations, which will cost about $3 million.

The economics of the movie business won’t let him restore the theater to one big cinema. But he’s planning to give the Admiral new life by renovating it, so the theater will light up for comedy and music acts, not just darken for movies. Next year, Garrett said, he has a tentative agreement for B.B. King to perform there.

  • Good news for the closed Colonial Fox Theatre

PITTSBURG, KS — The Colonial Fox Theatre is about to be placed on the Kansas Preservation Alliance’s of the ‘Most Endangered Historic Places’.

Then, the Colonial Fox Foundation found out it has been given 501©3 status, meaning it is a not-for-profit organization, which could be helpful in raising funds.

To top it all off, the 400 for 40K campaign, in which 400 people are being solicited to donate $100 each to raise a total of $40,000, is just 31 donors from its goal.

  • Last of fire-twisted beams removed from Lebowsky Center

OWOSSO, MI — On Wednesday, October 24, a crane was used to remove the last remaining twisted beams over the balcony of the fire damaged and partially demolished Lebowsky Center. The Owosso Commmunity Players, which own the theater, plans to have the theater enclosed with re-constructed east, north and west walls, then a new roof. After that, interior work will be done as money allows. The work is being done by Sascon Construction of Owosso.

  • Question about Century Theaters

Does anyone happen to know what happened to the RKO Century Paramus Theaters on Rt.4 in Paramus, N.J? I used to love catching a glimpse of this theater and it’s marquee from my bus window on the way into N.Y.C.– I don’t see the building anymore. Thanks,
