    The Drexel story

BEXLEY, OH — A New York Times article highlights some memories of the Drexel Theatre.

The Drexel, though, survived. It opened that Depression Christmas with Sally Blane, Loretta Young’s sister, in “One Mile from Heaven,” and kept its screen flickering through the decades. By 1981 it had lost much of its luster, and was showing bargain movies just to survive, but it always managed to catch the eye of a young man with plans named Jeff Frank.

  • Free antique wall fan

This Graybar wall fan Model 7854C, hung on the left auditorium wall of the Palace Theatre in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. The Palace was built around 1922 and had no air conditioning. The building was remodeled into retail space, in the summer of 1971. The fan was removed from the wall then.

The grill measures 17 inches across, has three speeds, brass blades, oscillates, and has it’s original shortened cloth cord and small rounded plug. I think it was original to the theatre. Some others looked newer, but I took an older looking one. The fan is heavy.

Anyone who wants this fan can have it for free. Just come and pick it up or pay for the shipping. Any questions or if you want it, .

    Thanks,
    John

    CinemaTour.com visiting Long Island 9/27-9/30

Adam Martin & Scott Neff from CinemaTour.com will be driving around Long Island this coming Thursday through Sunday to take photos of as many theatres and cinemas as possible.

At this time it appears that the majority of the trip will be spent taking exterior photos, which while interesting, is not as exciting as seeing photos of actual auditoriums, lobbies and projection rooms. If you or somebody you know has access to the interiors of ANY theatres, please contact to discuss setting up a window so they could stop by and capture the theatre’s history.

This request is for any and all theatres on Long Island, and we’ll drive to the surrounding areas if it means getting detailed photos of anything about to close or be demolished.

Since we are from the West Coast, please comment/e-mail concerning locations that are a must see, or are themselves in danger of closing or being demolished. We don’t want to travel across the country and wind up missing the last opportunity to take the only photographs that may publicly exist of these beautiful (and sometimes not so beautiful) venues.

  • Hawaii Theaters profiled in SF Gate article

The SFGate, the online version of the San Francisco Chronicle, posted an article on the surviving movie palaces of Hawaii, including a terrific photo of the 1922 Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu with its magificent marquee.

The occasional rainy day in Hawaii may be one reason to choose a movie over the beach, but even in sunny weather, the major islands all have cinemas worthy of supporting roles in your vacation script. Maui, the Big Island and Oahu also offer annual film festivals, with indoor and outdoor screening venues (often large resort lawns). For those who really want to keep the sand under their toes, there’s Sunset on the Beach, Waikiki’s free monthly event at Queen’s Beach (across from the zoo); details at sunsetonthebeach.net.

Festival or no, movie-theater buffs can take in one of these distinctive cinemas year-round.

You can read more at the SFGate.

  • Dupont Circle 5 to close in Jan ‘08

WASHINGTON, DC — According to a report in the Washington Post, the AMC Dupont Circle 5, a 5 screen 725 seat miniplex, will officially close by the end of January ‘08. It was the last surviving theater in that area after the closings of area theaters such as the Janus, single screen Dupont and Embassy. Its replacement will be an undisclosed retailer.

The last movie theater standing in Dupont Circle, a neighborhood once known for its small, funky, foreign and art-house film offerings, will close in January after struggling to compete with the area’s bigger and newer multiplexes.

The demise of the Dupont 5 reflects the increased difficulty for smaller, neighborhood theaters competing with megaplex venues. Those behemoths, after conquering the suburbs with their stadium seating and surround-sound offerings, have steadily gained a foothold in urban markets. It is also a sign of the continuing change underway in one of the most distinctive neighborhoods in Washington, one brought on by increasing rents for commercial real estate.
