Toronto’s Revue Cinema loses its marquee

TORONTO, CANADA — Toronto’s 94-year-old Revue Cinema lost its marquee early Sunday morning (Feb. 18) when it collapsed and fell onto the sidewalk.

It is believed that the weight of recent snowfall was the final straw and that the marquee had become rotten at its core. Luckily it fell at 3 AM so no one was injured.

The Revue was most recently part of the Festival Cinema chain. It closed its doors last June 30 after the owners decided to sell the chain. A local group was trying to save the cinema for local theatre and cultural events plus the occasional movie. So this comes as a big blow to them.

  • Village Entertainment vs. Classic Cinemas

    Hello Fellow CT Fans:

I’m relatively new to this site. I don’t have the vast knowledge that many of you have. But I have become more and more interested in cinemas and live theatres.

One thing that I’ve always wondered about is the two local mini-chains here in Chicagoland, Village Theatres and Classic Cinemas. Specifically, I’ve always wondered why Classic Cinemas seems to be so successful and Village Theatres is not. Both chains have had a few things in common. They are locally owned. They have taken over cinemas that were cast off by other chains.

  • Stargate Twin update

    Hello,

I stumbled upon your website tonight and I’ve found it very interesting. It’s nice to know that some of these old theaters are being preserved, if not physically, at least through memories. I have some unfortunate news about the Stargate Twin Theater in Rapid City, SD.

I have lived in Rapid City all of my life so I can give you a brief history of the theater for you to post on your site, but before I do I must tell you that the theater has been closed since January 1st. The signs have disappeared and the windows have been covered with white paper. I read an article in our local newspaper that the company that owns the Stargate could not come to an agreement with the people who lease them the theater. Apparently they wanted a lot more then what the Stargate could afford.

Apparently before they closed up they took out everything including all of the seats in both theaters. The theater will probably be torn out as easily as possible (considering it’s located in a shopping center which will not be torn down) and replaced with a retail store.

    Status: Closed 2006
    Screens: Single Screen
    Style: Generic (1970’s)
    Function: second run movies
    Seats: 500 ??
    Chain: Former United Artists

    Digital Cinema and You

Pretty soon, the theater landscape as we know it will be changing dramatically. Gone will be those pesky cigarette burns and color shifting in between reels. Even if you see a film a month after it came out, you’ll still be looking at a pristine print. But what price will we be paying for this new revolution? How will digital cinema change the layout of what we know as a movie theater?

New cinemas are already trying to attract people looking for all types of entertainment. 18 screens just isn’t enough anymore. Now, you have to have a cafe, a bowling alley, as well as be in close proximity to restaurants. Digital cinema will take that one step further.

You know those events you read about with the opera performances and live concerts being projected in movie theaters. Well, there’s going to be a lot more of that. Digital projectors have been around for years but what’s really going to turn things upside down is digital distribution. Once a variety of features is just a click away, a lot more screens will be used to show programming outside of standard films. Will the idea of a theater maintain its luster or will cinemas just become collections of big rooms with lots of seats where you find product available elsewhere?

  • British Cinema in Hollywood?

As Hollywood holds title to “The Entertainment Capital of the World” I question why there are so very few cinemas left, especially on the Boulevard?

Certainly some remain but are closed eyesores, rotting away and it is my contention to get the Hollywood elite to join this campaign.

A small group of us are really keen to re-open one… not just to run any movies but films with a BRITISH theme to them.

  • Garden Theatre - March 1 ceremony

WINTER GARDEN, FL — The marquee and facade of the soon to be completely renovated Garden Theatre will be revealed on March 1. We’re still short about $500,000. Does anyone out there have a checkbook handy???

    Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890

Did the Sherman Antitrust act of 1890 apply to the motion picture industry or was it at a later date? I am trying to find out when the film companies were forced to sell off their theaters.

    Thank you.
