    Kerasotes behavior classes

CICERO, IL — I’m not really sure how to best summarize this without making it sound controversial… I know it will spur a lot of commentary here.

Basically, a Kerasotes theater outside Chicago is requiring teens that want to see movies alone at night to take a lecture on personal conduct with their parents.

A new 14-screen movie theater opened in Cicero Friday, but teenagers under 18 can’t go at night unless they’re with a parent. If they want to go unaccompanied by an adult, they have to take a class and get a “code of conduct” ID card.

Kerasotes started requiring ID cards last year at its theatres in South Bend, Ind. when three teenagers were arrested for fighting. In order to get the cards here, teens and their parents have to sit through a 10 minute lecture.

  • Warner Grand Theatre reopens after major redo

SAN PEDRO, CA — The Warner Grand Theatre, L.A.’s venerable Naby reopened this past Saturday with a stunning performance by the resident, Golden State Pops Orchestra.

This marked the first performance with the near completion of an $800,000 restoration
including the rebuilding of the original seats, complete down to a near ‘dead-on’ re-covering of the 1500 plus seats with a customed loomed fabric, replicating the original.

Also included was the complete strip of the stagehouse from its original hemp system, to a more modern “T” rail, complete with a new loading dock and a new screen system and updated film sound capabilities.

Funding for this major restoration was accomplished and continues by the community theatre support group, Grand Vision Foundation.

For info about future programs, visit The Warner Grand Official Website.

  • Cerrito Theater returns with new agenda

EL CERRITO, CA — Restored to deco glory, the Cerrito Theater prepares for first screenings in a half century.

The Cerrito Theater is so close to completion you can almost smell the popcorn from San Pablo Avenue. The $5 million restoration project has been underway for more than five years, but soon, very soon, the popcorn will pop, the lights will dim and the Cerrito will open for business again.

On November 1, Casablanca and Pulp Fiction will become the first movies screened in the Cerrito since the mid 1960s, breathing new life into the deco theater that was originally built in 1937.

Unlike most movie theaters, the two theaters at the Cerrito will have couches and cocktail tables as well as the traditional theater seats. Beer is served in the theater, and food, like homemade pizza, can be ordered and delivered to customers during the flick. Two cafes, the It Club and the It Club Too, flank the theaters entrance, so moviegoers can hang out before and after movies.

  • Closure of former Gaumont Palace, Cheltenham, UK

CHELTENHAM, GLOUCESTERSHIRE, UK — The former Gaumont Palace cinema, latterly the Odeon Cheltenham, closed down permanently on 5th November 2006.

The cinema opened in 1933 and had a long history of live music performances as well as film. In the 1970’s, as with most Odeons, the single auditorium was triplexed and subsequently awkwardly sub-divided still further into seven screens.

Despite this, it struggled to remain competitive and, in the wake of the opening of the nearby Cineworld multiplex, staff were given just thirty days to revive its fortunes or face closure.

    Victoria Theatre Documentary

AUCKLAND, NZ — Just a quick note to let you know that I have just completed my documentary about Californian John Leon Benwell and the Victoria Cinema which he built in 1912.

The cinema has had a troubled few years and whether it survives or dies, its history and the people and stories surrounding it are now captured on one DVD.

Visit Mosaic Media for details and the promo video.

    Many thanks

  • Search of former Philadelphia theater discovers silent film treasures

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A recent search of Port Richmond’s Richmond Theater found the remnants of several silent film posters. The theater opened in 1913 with silent pictures and closed in 1952 as a second run movie house. The building now houses the Port Richmond Book Store Co. after subsequent uses as a vending machine company and hardware supply business.

The posters were found in a crawl space which traverses the entire main auditorium. Search crews will further explore the venue in early December.

Each of the posters dates to 1917 and provides a unique insight into the early silver screen.
