    Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving from everyone at Cinema Treasures! We’ll be taking a break for a few days and returning on Monday with more news. We hope all of you have a happy and healthy holiday.

  • Shores Theatre closing for renovation/expansion

ST. CLAIR SHORES, MI — The Shores Theatre in the Detroit suburb of St. Clair Shores will close for five months to allow for expansion and renovation to create a five-screen cineplex with stadium-style seating.

About two years in the making, the theater project has begun with interior demolition scheduled for later this month, said David Tolfree, operational manager for the theater. The goal, he said, is to have the project wrapped up for a May 1 grand opening with the premiere of “Spider-Man 3.”

The theater interior will be gutted to make way for five theaters with stadium seating, two concessions stands, a larger lobby and two entrances. The exterior of the facility, which was built in 1935, will feature two automated ticket kiosks and new signage.

The theater’s existing marquee will be preserved by the city’s historical society, said theater spokesman Bruce Ferguson.

  • Pensacola Dollar Theater dares to challenge new multiplex

PENSACOLA, FL — With a new 15 screen theater opening nearby, Alan Teicher is going against the grain and opening an eight screen deep discount theater at the same time.

The Silver Screen’s niche is to offer a meal and drinks while sitting at a table to watch movies. Estrada said he’s in a position to offer all kinds of movies, including cult classics and home-made movies by local film producers.

“Pensacola is a good movie-going market,” said Estrada, who has been showing movies locally since 1982. Time will tell whether the market will grow to handle the additional screens, he said.

    Update on site performance

As many of you know, we’ve had to temporarily disable our search tool due to the high volume of traffic that Cinema Treasures is receiving.

We’re making good progress improving overall performance on the site. Theater pages and news pages are now loading near instantaneously, thanks to the caching support we’ve added. We’ve also made a number of optimizations to the site that will help improve performance.

As a side effect of this, we’ve limited the “Who’s Online?” feature to just the homepage. While it’s nice to know who’s online, this feature was one of the things really slowing down the site. So that means going forward, “who’s online” really means “who’s online on the homepage”. Practically speaking, it might seem like less people are online, but the true number will be much higher.

So when will search return? The answer is… as soon as search doesn’t make the rest of the website so slow it’s unusable. Our goal is to fix this issue by the end of the year, but we’re making very good progress and may be able to restore this feature soon.

As always, thanks for your patience and continued support. And have a nice Thanksgiving!

  • Theater renders movie ratings totally useless

Here’s one man’s take on how theaters are dropping the ball again, but this time by not properly patrolling their R- rated screens for underage children.

The big surprise came when the movie ended, and the house lights were turned up. As we filed from the theater, it was obvious that a good portion of the crowd were kids without adult supervision. Simply put, they either were sold tickets to an R-rated movie, or they bought a ticket to a G-rated movie and then went into a theater to watch an R-rated film.

Either way, it is wrong, and the theater is at fault.

I’m not one to blame someone else for a parent’s mistake. Mom and Dad are responsible for the behavior of their children. Corporate America shouldn’t be required to be surrogate parents.

  • New art house in Ithaca

ITHACA, NY — Despite direct competition from local theaters, plans have been put into motion for a new five screen theater built to show independent films.

7th Art Corporation, the operator of Cinemapolis and Fall Creek Pictures, plans to open a five-screen stadium-seating movie theater with 500 to 600 seats.

“The movie theater will focus mainly on independent and art films, unlike the Pyramid Mall Theater, but all the movies will be first-run, unlike the Cornell Cinema,” said Community Development Director Nels Bohn. “The push for this project really began in 2001, but now finally with public approval, we are hopeful that everything will be completed by spring 2008.”

  • Documentary features revamped theaters

BRITTON, SD — A South Dakota filmmaker is travelling across the state to highlight the new life of old theaters. At the forefront of the film is Britton’s Strand Theatre.

Bryce Jarrett and Tom Farber are doing everything they can to ensure that the Strand Theater remains an integral part of Britton.

Jarrett is executive producer of a documentary titled “Small Town Silver Screen,” which showcases several small-town South Dakota movie theaters.
