Lebowsky Center to hold fundraiser to restore its marquee
OWOSSO, MI — The newly restored Lebowsky Center’s still has one more repair job to complete which is to restore its 1952 vintage marquee, fabricated by the now defunct Long Sign Company of Detroit, which remains electrically inoperable.
The Owosso Community Players will hold a reception to restore the marquee on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the adjacent Studio Theater. Dessert, wine and cheese and other refreshments will be served. The ticket price is $25, with proceeds going to the Marquee Fund. Tickets are available online or at the Box Office, 114 E. Main St. in Owosso, Michigan.

Egyptian to reopen in October
SEATTLE, WA — The Egyptian Theatre is reopening in October following a year of darkness after being acquired by the Seattle International Film Festival. They plan on showing film year-round and with over $300K in upgrades, the theatre should be in better shape than ever.

Look Behind the Final Curtain in Massachusetts
BOSTON AND HOLYOKE, MA — Two photographers are teaming up for theatre-themed workshosp with an inside look you won’t want to miss. Matthew Christopher of Abandoned America and Matt Lambros of After the Final Curtain will be holding photo workshops in the Victory and Everett Square theatres in late September featuring exclusive access at these two palaces in disrepair.

Georgia Theatre changes hands
ATHENS, GA — Wilmot Greene has owned the Georgia Theatre for 10 years and weathered the greatest storms of all including the theatre burning down five years ago. Now he’s sold it to a group of investors, Agon Sports and Entertainment. Don’t expect big changes though. The formula of bringing in top musical acts has been working and with the same group of employees, the experience will be preserved.

Italy invests in cinemas
KFTV has reported that Italy has dramatically shifted to directing dollars towards its film industry with new generous tax credits for productions. In addition to that, they’re showing some love for their cinemas with a 30% rebate for restoration projects.

Renewing the Princeton Garden
PRINCETON, NJ — The Garden Theater isn’t the only local classic theater turning heads after reopening two months ago. Renew Theatres has been revitalizing cinemas across the Philadelphia suburbs like the Hiway in Jenkintown, the Ambler, and the County in Doylestown.

Tricycle Theatre in Jewish film festival row over Israeli funding
LONDON, ENGLAND — The Tricycle Cinema is refusing to host UK Jewish Film Festival as it is sponsored by the Israeli Embassy. They have offered to contribute funds to make up for the sponsorship but strongly oppose to support any initiative with support from either side in the Middle East conflict.

Last Denver-area drive-in
COMMERCE CITY, CO — The 88 Drive-In is in danger and it’s not because of a digital projector for a change. The popular drive-in has been inciting traffic jams and they can’t afford the changes the city wants them to make to rectify the situation.

Covington theater returns to glory
COVINGTON, LA — Shuttered six years ago, the Movie Tavern was in decline in the latter part of its days as the Holiday Square. It’s finally back though following an extensive renovation and a destination again as one of the only dine-in theaters in the area.
