30 Sept. 2013 Hi; I’ve always been interested in visiting the Metro Theatre, 667 Bloor Street West, Toronto.
My Wife & I would really appreciate someone/some ones contacting us to tell us all about the Theatre (Best times to go, about the different screenings, about the different audiences etc etc) My best contact is my email address: Thanks:
The attempt to add mainstream programming to the Metro was a predictable failure. While horror and schlock audiences may have been willing to attend a dumpy old porn theatre, no one else was. During the fall of 2012, the Metro advertised a series of mainstream movies, but it was not clear how many of them were even shown. I stopped by at the beginning of November for the advertised “Pythonfest” screenings of MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL and LIFE OF BRIAN only to be told that, no, the theatre was showing porn that night. When I called the Projection Booth the next day for an explanation, I was told that the house belonging to the Metro’s owner had been robbed, thus he wasn’t at the theatre that night and the other person there (some older guy named Warren) didn’t know how to run the digital projector, hence them showing porn instead. Bizarre. At any rate, as of January 2013, the Metro is still listed on the Projection Booth’s website, but nothing is scheduled, so it is presumably back to its all-adult programming.
Apparently, according to the articles, the new business model is to continue running porn during the day and switching to independent and alternative fare in the evenings after a thorough daily cleaning of the theater with isopropyl alcohol. I think I will go elsewhere when I am next in Toronto.
Another article on the revamped theatre, which is now scheduled to re-open on Aug. 24/12: http://tinyurl.com/crqscjd
The website for the new incarnation of the theatre is located here: http://www.projectionbooth.ca/#!PB%20Metro%20Home/cee5
This the theater’s official website: http://www.metrotheatretoronto.com/
There is a history page indicating that it opened in 1939; the website suggests that although it still has an adult-theater emphasis, it is also marketing itself to some extent as mixed-use venue.
Renovations and a format change are underway with the theatre re-opening on Aug. 17th, 2012:

The address at the top of this page is wrong. It should be “677 Bloor Street West”

This cinema, while now a tawdry throwback to the diminshed lot of great movie houses that was common in the ‘70s and '80s, has an illustrious history and interesting lobby decor.
I hoped someone like the Rainbow group would purchase it because the well heeled neigbourhod (which I live in) could use a first run house…but alas, they are not about spending money on renovations, but are about taking over existing multi screen houses (such as the one they had in Fairview Mall and the one they operate successfully on Front) and being very competitive price wise.
This place gives a new word for STICKY FLOORS! LOL!

I VISITED THE THEATRE YESTERDAY JUNE 27 ,2007 THE PEOPLE WERE FRIENDLY AND IT WAS A NICE EXPERIANCE
THEY HAVE TWO SCREENS AND SIX MOVIES SHOWING DAILY FROM 12 NOON
THE PICTURE QUALITY WAS GOOD AND THE SCREENS WERE LARGE *IT WAS WORTH IT
Oh yeah, the guy who owns this place was hanging onto the glory days by havign a sign saying it was 35mm — the place had been broken up into several smaller video theatres but I guess the projection room is intact so the guy claimed he was still showing 35mm! He kept one old film poster up in the display case as if to confirm it…
It was a telling sign when they rented out part of the lobby to someone selling remaindered glitz-clothing!! Great pic.
Apparently, this theater is on the market now & may not be open much longer. I read this on the DVDManiacs forum.
