Four and a half years to respond to the last post… WOW!
I’m not sure what Macon’s problem with movie theaters might be. It seems that whatever is new and shiny is THE place. AmStar (The Grand) did it to the Regal and now everyone seems to be flocking to Kathleen/ Warner Robins where GTC has a GTX multiplex. With the industry in the shape it’s in, I don’t see a new place being built any time soon.
On the other hand, there have been quite a few movies MADE in Macon over the past few years.

I’ve been a few times in the last two months; always in the middle of the week and always a decent sized crowd. I hope it hangs in there.
Clean auditoriums. Friendly staff. Good concessions.
The theater officially closed its doors on August 4, 2014 after the August 3, 2014, 10:00 p.m. showing of The Amazing Spiderman 2. The films on the final marquee were:

I’m pretty sure this might have been ironed out already but (JFBrantley), yes the building in your photo is the old Colonial Theater. The entire red brick building housed the theater in its time.
The pool hall (Dodo’s) is the part with the little flags. Next to the pool hall is an asian bistro which was also part of the theater lobby at one time. In between is a flight of stairs that takes you up to a now closed bar/nightclub which was probably the original balconey area of the theater.
While there were some real “renovations” the theater was basically the same. It was more of a “clean up” than a true renovation. I only saw a single film there and the auditorium I was in was very dated. In its current condition it would be a great discount theater.
Like I posted earlier, I think this theater is in a decent location but AmStar currently has the market cornered.
It was built by Georgia Theatre in the mid 70’s and was included in the sell out to United Artists Theatres in the late 80’s before UA was bought by Regal.
I’ve updated the streetview to show the actual location. The theater itself is gone. The Linens~N~Things building is a new structure and is now abandoned as well.
As an aside the Macon Mall itself is now only a shell of its former self. Once the largest mall in the state it is now a place for the dregs to hang out. Most of the retail space is empty and the owner is preparing to demolish half the buidling (ironically the “new” half) and re-establish the remaining area as “Art Space.”
I’ve updated the street view(hopefully) to show the actual building. It is now a furniture store. On the backside of the building which is facing Eisenhower Parkway, the exit staircase from one of the auditoriums is still there.
It’s about time this theater gets a makeover. It is in a great location but since the opening of the AmStar/ Grand on Zebulon it has not been very well thought of.
The location is pretty good considering the new “mall” just up the highway and I’m would imagine with digital projection, etc. It might become the alternative that it always should have been.
This exact theater did not open in 1983. Carmike(then Martin Theaters) moved from the Campus Theater and set up a triplex inside the Hatcher Square Mall in 1983. They sold the Campus Theater building to a local businessman. According to that businessman, Carmike sold the building with the understanding that it would not be used as a theater for ten years.
Carmike moved from inside the mall to it’s current location in 1987/88.
Sorry for the misinformation I gave about three years ago. limovies is totally correct. Star Wars opened at the Hicksville Fox Plaza North and South. Sources list it as a Mann Theater at the time.

Nice place for the price although there has been little upkeep and the auditoriums are a bit rundown.
The staff are pretty friendly and the concessions are moderately priced.

I hate to keep harping on the PathMark question, but didn’t the PathMark open up into the mall area?
There was a Chinese restaraunt, a Carvel and possibly a pizza place in this shopping center anchored by Waldbaums and Play World.
Does anyone remember the names of these places? (other than Carvel!!!)
