Hey T228 I agree the Ritz Cinema would be a GREAT place to see BIG SCREEN CLASSICS! While the distance you live from the Lafayette would make it impractical to come all the way up for a current film, I am in in disagreement with you in regards to the choice of venue.
Yes a new multi-plex with big screens large auditoriums and stadium seats is nicer then the older “Shoebox theatres” I go there over the Clearview Shoebox Theatre near me.
However I ALWAYS go to The Lafayette when they offer the same film as the Palisades mall. It is WELL WORTH giving up Stadium seating and some other comforts to go to a real Old Time MOVIE PALACE!! The BIG AMC’s will ALWAYS be around, Gems like The Lafayette are VERY SPECIAL and getting rarer every year.
If anyone has not yet seen Slumdog Millionaire it WILL be lighting up the silver screen at The Lafayette this Friday the 20th! It is the odds on fav to WIN BEST PICTURE on Sunday!
Say NO to the BIG BAD MALL and the little shoe box size theatres and come to Sufern NY where a REAL MOVIE THEATRE AWAITS!!
Rhett, while I feel extremely sad that Nelson,Bob, Pete and the rest of the staff who did such a wonderful job with the classic series and special events are no longer involved with the Lafayette.
I treasure all the wonderful events they presented since taking over the theatre beginning in Nov 2002(with the Grand RE-Opening with Harry Potter with over 800 people in attendance!
The silent movie Steamboat Bill Jr with a 20 piece orchestra! The Sci-Fi spectular The 3D Weekend(where they ran out of the deluxe 3D glasses the first night and had to send someone BY CAR to Boston t FRI NIGHT to get more!
When you came into the theatre everyone knew your name . Nelson Bob and Pete always took time to say hello and thank you for coming. It felt like you were part of a family VS just another faceless warm body to fill the seats at a mutti-plex.
I equally enjoyed going to a regular film on a Fri or Sat evening, with the organ playing before each show and the curtain opening the “Lets All Go To The Lobby†cartoon playing and enjoying BIG BLOCKBUSTERS: The Dark Night, The Latest Harry Potter flick, Spider-man ,Iron Man, Casino Royale , The Matrix, The Lord Of The Rings Series
Even smaller films such as Flash Of Genius, Becoming Jane, Bee Movie, Flushed Away, Little Miss Sunshine whisked me away for a wonderful evening of movie magic!
Does anyone on this board TRULY THINK that going to a cut up little SHOE-BOX with a POSTAGE STAMP size screen (LIKE CLOSTER) or any of the other theatres in the Rockland, Westchester, or Bergen County can compare to The Lafayette?!?!?
Folks The Lafayette IS STILL IN BUSINESS! The organ WILL still play on Fri and Sat nights the heavy red curtain will still open and the movie will still be splayed EDGE TO EDGE on the GIANT SILVER SCREEN!
So DO NOT GIVE UP ON THIS FINE,UNIQUE, STUNNING GRAND MOVIE PALACE!
IT IS THE ONLY ONE OF IT KIND IN THE ENTIRE TRI_SATE AREA
IT NEEDS AND DESERVES ALL OUR SUPPORT JUST AS MUCH AS IT DID
THE PAST 6 Years!
I would be very surprised if ANY shows take place at The Paradise in the near future. I got the same answer in July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov. “We are booking shows for the fall and beyond”
Unless a new management company takes over operation of this GRAND PALACE, NO SHOWS WILL BE OPENING HERE!
It was a BITTERLY COLD day outside this morning but it was wonderfully WARM and TOASTY inside the Lafayette Theatre for the annual Christmas screening of It’s A Wonderful Life!
When I arrived at 10 am the crowd already snaked from under the glowing marquee down the sidewalk curving around the corner and extending far down Washington avenue!
When I finally made it inside the warm interior of the the grand old lady I quickly made my way up to the balcony for a prime seat!
Soon after getting comfortable the sold out crowd was treated to a wonderful performance of holiday tunes from the Golden fingers of the ONE and ONLY Jeff Barker on The Ben Hall Memorial Mighty Wurlitzer!
Then Nelson and Abby donned the stage all dressed up and did a great reading of “The Night Before Christmasâ€
Santa then made an early appearance all the way from the North Pole! Old Saint Nick thanked everyone for coming and said “I don’t go to the Palisades Mall!†I only make stops at REAL THEATRES!â€
One more surprise a beautful young lady sang Holly Night to the delight of the full house.
Then it was time for the show to begin! The curtain opened and some shorts played along with a GREAT Warner Brother’s cartoon.
The the heavy read curtain closed and re-opened and the movie magic began with the opening scene of the timeless “It’s A Wonderful Lifeâ€
The experience of seeing this classic with 1000+ people in attendance was INCREDIBLE!
Thank you to Nelson, Abby, Bob, Pete, Jeff Barker and the entire staff of The Lafayette Theatre Rockland’s ONLY Movie Palace
If you HAVE NOT gotten your tickets for It’s A Wonderful Life taking place THIS SAT DEC 20th make sure to DO SO! The show WILL SELL OUT BY 1045am on SATURDAY morning!
Advanced ticket holder’s WILL be admitted when the doors open at 10:30am SHARP!
Concerts are a fine draw, but with ticket prices from $40.00 to $100.00+ the Paradie needs to have tower priced events.Classic films from the 40’s 70’s would be a good draw.
Looks like there is “TROUBLE IN PARADISE!” I was told in July that “There will be a BIG Schedule of shows for the fall”. I have called back 4 or 5 times since then and been told that “In a few weeks we will have the schedule up”
I even received a call back from the manager of the Paradise in response to one of my calls around Aug 22nd, promising the unavailing of the fall/winter schedule.
I hope that some events will be taking place at this Grand Movie Palace. However with the bad economic times that seems to be unlikley.
Hopefully NEW owners will do a better job with the Drive In Then the current management. When I went there the film presentation was average. . However the Snack Bar, the main source of a Drive In’s income was very unappealing to say the least.
I went to this fine downtown Cinema on Aug 16th 08. WOW what a wonderful experience. The theatre has been repainted and freshened up. When you walk in you buy your ticket right behind the ticket booth is an old time candy counter. The lobby has mirrors to the right and left as you walk in.Above the mirrors is beautful gilding
Both of the cinema’s are roomy and the seating comfortable. There is even a balcony section with an old time lighted sign at the foot of the balcony.
The organ concert by John Barrata was GREAT!(FRI NIGHTS)
The town is just as nice as the theatre with great shops and restaurants! There is even a Policeman that rides a BIKE up and down the sidewalk!
Outside of town in Augusta on Rt 15 is the Chatterbox Drive In Resturant!
So I URGE ALL CINEMA TREASURES MEMBERS to GO TO NEWTON NJ AND enjoy the area for the day and CHECK OUT THE NEWTON THEATRE FOR A GREAT EVENING OF MOVIE MAGIC!
I talked to a rep at the box office today. He said that by tomorrow they will have a new schedule of shows. They will be some very big surprises in his words. See we will see hopefully they will offer some shows aimed at a more diverse population then the shows in the past.
According to a The Times Herald’s Movie Section the Milford Cinema IS showing WALL-E .However their phone # is not in operation.Does anyone know of a working phone # for this theatre?
The cinema has been closed since 2006 sadly. The owners spent $300,000 dollars fixing up this gem. Independent films and films aimed at the Hasidic community did not fly. Here is hoping someone will re-open this fine cinema.
Great news Pete! Will the organ be playing Fri and Sat night? Being that it Grand-Reopening this weekend, it would be nice to have John play both nights!
Only 50 or so people attended the 5pm show on Sat the 19th.It was a very nice day, passover and many people go on vacation this upcoming week. So this may have accounted for the low turnout.
Their were about 130-150 for the 8pm showing for Goldfinger. Not as much as I expected but the holiday weekend and nice weather most likely played a factor.

Is this theatre under new ownership for the upcoming 2009 season?

It was fun to see The Dawn Of The Dead at the Abby.I have not seen a continuation of the “Big Screen” program at the Abby Cinema’s in 2008.
Lets hope they do more of these screenings as it brings in extra business and gives a variety as opposed just to showing regular Hollywood fare.
The Newton Theatre is once again doing very well selling out on Fri and Sat nights now that Galaxy has been running the cinema for the past 6+ months.
That is what happens when you have management who is experienced and knows how to run a cinema and treats their customers with respect!
If you HAVE NOT gotten your tickets for It’s A Wonderful Life taking place THIS SAT DEC 20th make sure to DO SO! The show WILL SELL OUT BY 1045am on SATURDAY morning!

If you SNOOZE YOU LOOSE!
The original theatre is intact, it has not been split. The 2nd theatre is a few store fronts down in what used to be a drug store
I have been to the Cedar Lane Cinema a number of times.I have NEVER experienced any problem close to what was described in the above post.
The film was crisp and clear and had no sound or projection problems.
It is not as nice as the Lafayette but a much better choice then a multiplex that charges $11.50 VS $4.75
Plus the town has a GREAT ice cream shoppe and bakery!
Not far from Ten

I was told that the schedule for Mid Oct to Dec WILL be ready soon. I will post when I have the information.

This Thursday the 17th will BE the LAST day for the 2008 Season. The Drive In Will re-open inn April 2009.
The Overlook Drive In Will be open until mid Oct
Hopefully NEW owners will do a better job with the Drive In Then the current management. When I went there the film presentation was average. . However the Snack Bar, the main source of a Drive In’s income was very unappealing to say the least.
This fine country Cinema has NOT opened for the 2008 Summer season

Great news Pete! Will the organ be playing Fri and Sat night? Being that it Grand-Reopening this weekend, it would be nice to have John play both nights!
Friday May 16th is the SCHEDULED date for the GRAND-RE-OPENING of the HISTORIC NEWTON CINEMA! Three CHEERS for Bob, Nelson and the Galaxy staff!
