The Chester Theatre was opened prior to 1941. We visit this theatre when we are on vacation. The first time we went, two women were sitting outside of the theatre on lawn chairs. As our small group approached, one said to the other, “It looks like we’ll have a movie tonight”, and got up to sell us tickets! Needless to say, there was a small audience for the recently-opened “Legally Blonde” that night!
The Carol Theatre was closed in the summer of 2013, unable to fund the cost to convert to digital projection. It now hosts occasional live performances/events.

This fine country Cinema has NOT opened for the 2008 Summer season
I live in this town and I’m a film student. It made me very disappointed to see what had happened to our town theater when returning for the summer. I am not sure why it was shut down, but it definitely has seen better days. When I make it in this business I will return to Chestertown to get the Carol back up and running. What a treasure it really is and if redone right it could become a significant part to our little town’s business district. I hope people see this as well and help restore the theater either before me or with me. All I need is money.
The Carol Theatre IS OPEN FOR THE 2010 SUMMER SEASON! They have a NEW PHONE NUMBER! 518-494-2299!!
It appears this theatre could not afford the upgrade to digital and closed in summer of 2012.
Yes the theater could not afford to upgrade to digital. 2013 was the last year it was open showing movies. 2014 there were some concerts featured along with some other live events.
