I would say I got to about 75 movies a year. There is a WONDERFUL Movie theatre 15 minutes from my house, The Lafayette in Suffern NY. They still know what showmanship is! Built in 1924 with over 1000 seats and classic movies in the fall and spring on Sat morn.
I also attend the Drive In’s 4 of them within an hour or so driving distance.
Plus even tho I dislike the multi-plex’s I can get in for free on Tue at any of Clearview’s Theatres (including the Ziegfield) any other day it is $6.00. Discount tix to AMC can be had for &7.50
That status of this theatre sadly should be changed to CLOSED! I go up to the area every summer. In 2005 I saw Dark Water there.I was talking to th owner and she said they were having a tough time bringing in business. 2005 was a off year for the movies as many of you remember.
They did not re-open for 2006-or 2007.This is very upsetting as it was a very nice place to see a movie. The Lake Theatre in Indian lake NY also did not open for the 2006 and 2007 summer season.
I just spoke to an agent at the box office. There is boxing this Thursday and on April 26th a Latin concert.More events will be added by the middle of the week.
Showing older movies from the 30’s-80’s when no big events are taking place would be a good way to make $$$.Charge $6.00 and do a double feature.
They just have to get projection equipment and set up for films.
I just called @ 12:35AM and the number was working.Someone DID answer “Utopia’s Paradise Theatre” they were security but said to call the box office in the morning.
I will check it out and see what info I can come up with.
I have a feeling that the Newton Cinema will not be “Dark” for too much longer.I am not at liberty to say who will be taking over the operation of this fine treasure at this time.
Springtime will see the re-birth of the Newton Cinema!
This truly is a GEM! I discovered it back in 1989 when I went to SUNY New Paltz.
Movies at that time were only $2.50! Inside when you walk in there are old style candy machines that STILL WORK! Just pop in your $$$ and PULL on the handle and out pops a Milky Way!
The screen is large the floors wood and seats leather.
Popcorn is good and very inexpensive.
Admission is now a very reasonable $6.00
The town is also charming and like a trip back in time to the 1950’s
I went to many movies I was in college at SUNY NEW PALTZ. IT was a twin for a year.Movies were watchable with decent size screens.
Then they had the bright idea to make it a QUAD!
Now it has to be ONE OF THE WORST MOVIE THEATRES! The front two theatres have only 5 rows of seats with THE SMALLEST SCREENS I HAVE EVER SEEN! The sound is also sub-par.
The back screens are a tad bigger but still much smaller then they used to be.
I do not see how they stay in business !
Do yourself a favor and travel down to Rosendale just 20 minutes from New Paltz and see a film in the Rosendale Theatre a TRUE GEM!
People should TAKE NOTE you can buy the Entertainment Book and get Discount tickets for AMC And Clearview Cinemas. The AMC tickets for GOLD(Go the day film opens) are $7.50 Silver (use ten days AFTER film opens) $6.50
For Clearview(Zig) tickets are $7.00 for “Gold” and $6.00 10 days after film opens.
Plus if you are a Optimum Tripple Play customer then movies at Clearview Cinemas are $6.00 AT ALL CINEMA"S (Even the ZIG)
Tue night FREE.
The entertainment book is NOT THE ONLY place for discounted movie tickets! One can get 40-60% off regular box office prices!
The Wilson’s who own and operate the Warwick Drive In also own the land the Drive In sits on. This plus the fact that it draws large crowds in the season(they have to turn cars away in the prime summer months) will ensure that this Drive In WILL BE around for MANY MANY years!
I agree the Newton is a GREAT CINEMA! The company that took it over From Galaxy did not have much experience with the movie business. If Cearview or someone else takes it over I am sure it can succeed.
Showing movies 3-4 weeks after open and charging $5.00 would bring in a lot of business.
I attended the screening of The Jazz Singer last night(11-10-07) The organ was playing before the show, according to the staff this was only the 2nd time it has been played.
There were about 350 people so it was a good turnout. There was a historian there who spoke before and after the film.He was very informative.
The organ played into the start the film. The film came on with no sound, people joked around that this was the silent version of the movie. After 5 min the lights came up and we were told the problem would be fixed shortly.
The film came up again and this time with sound! The print of the film was very good given it age(It was WB vault print)
The movie was GREAT on the BIG screen in a GREAT VENUE!
Jolson in “Blackface” was not offensive IMO.HE just sang as he would have in “White face” Other movies from that time did mock black people in a distasteful way.
While The Newton Theatre faced competition from AMC and the new Sparta cinema, there were several changes under New Day Cinema VS when Galaxy Corp ran the theatre.
The Newton had a wonderful pipe organ that was played before the Friday/Sat night evening screening.About a month after New Day took over operation, the organ fell silent.
This was unique and special attraction that many people enjoyed.By NOT continuing with this attraction, the Newton lost that little extra perk that is SO IMPORTANT to keep customers away from Sparta and AMC.
The addition of slide-shows(adds) and the end to classic movie music took away from the charm of the cinema.Plus no special progrmaing(like classic movies form the 30’s,40’s 50’s 60’s on a Sat or Sun morning or classic horror films on Fri,Sat at midnight would have helped bring in more business.
The Monday discount night was a good idea.
Yes running a small downtown movie theatre is hard, but with creative ideas and thinking outside the box would have kept movies lighting up the screens at Newton
It is very distressing to see this wonderful theatre CLOSE! The staff was friendly and very attentive. The popcorn and was always HOT and FRESH and not unreasonably priced. The pipe organ played on Friday was charming and added so much to the movie going experience.
The projection top notch, sets comfortable sound crisp and clear.
Going to a movie is much more then just sitting in a seat and watching the films.
This will hurt the economy of downtown Newton, all the people who came to eat before or after a show or shop, means thousands of dollars lost for local merchants.
At the multi-plexes the staff is indifferent, nobody knows your name or cares who you are! There no organ, no special programing, no or warmth. You are hit with 15 min of adds and previews! NO SHOWMANSHIP, NOTHING BUT OVERPRICED POPCORN/DRINKS!
This Cinema MUST BE RE_OPENED!! Maybe run movies 3-4 weeks after they run in Rockaway and charge $4.00 a ticket like the Ceder Lane cinema does in Teeneck NJ.
Shame on the residents of Newton for rushing off like sheep to the big multi-plex!
2005 was the last year the cinema was in operation. This is a shame as each theatre was of a good size. The main theatre had 550 or so seats.
This is an EXCELLENT DRIVE IN! The screen is BIG.Trees flank both sides of the screen. In addition there are NO HOUSES,BUSINESSES around the Drive In
This makes it whisper quiet and with no light anywhere around it is pitch dark PERFECT for viewing!
The Newton WILL have it’s GRAND RE-OPENING in MID APRIL!

The phone # for The Paradise on the top of this page is INCORRECT it should be changed to 718-563-2222

I will check it out and see what info I can come up with.
Cinema Treasures is NOT set up for comments on what the “scene” is inside adult theatres!
PLEASE take your comments PRIVATE and OFF THIS SITE if you want to talk about the sexual goings on in these cinema’s!!
Jason you SHOULD go to the LAFAYETTE Theatre in Sufferen! On Fri and Sat night they play the organ before the ISt show of the evening.
The staff is Friendly the popcorn fresh and hot.It is truly a wonderful experience going there!
IT is worth the trip from where you live!
I have a feeling that the Newton Cinema will not be “Dark” for too much longer.I am not at liberty to say who will be taking over the operation of this fine treasure at this time.

After 3+ years for trying to re-open the Pearl River Cinema, the PRDC lost the fight and the theatre will be used for retail space.
Not good for Downtown Pearl River which has fallen on hard times since BOTh theatres closed in 2000.
A victim of the HUGE MEGA MALL!!
I just went to see I Am Legend, good film but not as good as I expected it to be.
The new leather seats were comfortable. The size of the “theatre” downstairs is not bad, screen size is decent.
Even the upstairs theatre is not a bad space.
Some of the elements that existed when the Warner was a single screen are still intact today.
I would say it is Clearview’s best cinema in Northern NJ.
The Hyde Park Drive In WILL OPEN FOR THE 2008 SEASON in Mid April
Lets ALL hope someone comes in and takes over the Newton Cinema.
It has to be hurting the shops and restaurants, as hundreds of people are now not using the downtown as they did when the theatre was open.
Maybe show movies 3-4 weeks after then open and charge $4.00 a ticket.
People should TAKE NOTE you can buy the Entertainment Book and get Discount tickets for AMC And Clearview Cinemas. The AMC tickets for GOLD(Go the day film opens) are $7.50 Silver (use ten days AFTER film opens) $6.50

I know the Warsaw Cinema was showing Transformers in Sept 07. I called the theatre the other day and the number was disconnected.
