If the Allwood theater closes, then it will join this theater and the Clifton one as the last of a dying breed.

nearly 10 years after Clifton Commons opened and a few months before the new theater in Paterson opens, this is the only surviving small theater in Clifton. If it closes, it will hurt downtown businesses in the Allwood district.

There are still traces of General Cinema at the theater’s exterior, with the star shapes and curvy lines and the round marquee entrance. Old Popcorn Bob is nowhere to be found, only to be replaced by the AMC logo. Not too far from the theater, there are newer shopping districts around Clifton that will make traffic even more worse. And a new movie theater in Paterson will keep residents to their nearest theater, although it will be run by a much smaller chain.

speaking of holidays, AMC’s holiday pricing went into effect yesterday and will continue until January 4th. This is good news for me, since I’ll be catching up on some oscar-calibur flicks in a recession year. The last time a recession happened, people in Rockaway went to the older theater to catch a flick, and the chain survived, although it closed before it was over. I got an AMC gift card for xmas, about $25, so I’ll spend it on two tickets for Benjamin Button between me and my aunt, use my two coupons for a free small drink and small popcorn, and save the rest for an AM Cinema IMAX showing, since they’ll be the most expensive ticket in town!!!

THanks for those vintage photos, Warren. Sometime soon, I’ll ask my dad to take me to see a show at the hall.

digital imax saves time and money compared with regular imax but costs more than a dlp installation.

No construction on the imax theater yet the last time I was at the theater. I was checking the showtimes on Google, and advance tickets are available for two Met showings in HD. I’m not an opera fan, but for those who like it, it’s nice that they’re showing this popular film series for those who can’t make it to the city to see a sold-out show; this series is also held in Parsippany. The date is still on track for the IMAX theater to open with the re-release of The Dark Knight. Watching the film again on Blu-Ray can’t make up for seeing it again on a giant screen just in time for Oscar nominations.

I just went to see this movie at another AMC theater, the AMC in Rockaway, although it would’ve been cooler if the IMAX theater was open, despite the fact that the screen will be smaller than the one that I used to go to at this listed theater. The film was OK; the original is still a great sci-fi movie and worth watching again…..later on tonight it will be on Monsters HD after two Terminator movies, the first and second ones, which are the best of the Terminator films. Now that The Dark Knight is coming out in IMAX at my local theater, I won’t have to drive all the way to this theater and the one in Palisades Center to see a giant Joker.

I just went to this theater for a 4:50 showing of “The Day The Earth Stood Still”, the 2008 version of the 1951 sci-fi classic that I grew up with when I first saw it on VHS from a local library and saw it again on Monsters HD in a restored version. This version is way different than the original. The presentation was good, very few splices, and the crowd behaved well. Getting there was a chore, as there was traffic around the mall and some of the parking space wasn’t plowed well due to all that extra snow. The next movie I’m planning on seeing is Benjamin Button, and that Wrestler movie looks interesting since I used to like pro wrestling and liked Mickey Rourke in Sin City. Hopefully they’ll get some good art-house product sooner than later since most of the stuff playing here are remakes, kids stuff that no one hears of, and sequels that suck.

moviebuff82 commented about Happy 30th birthday, Superman!!! on Dec 18, 2008 at 11:10 am

Superman was more than just an average movie for an upcoming star named Reeve. It made him rich and he did more than just fly in tights; he founded a non-profit organziation founded after he suffured a back injury during a horse ride. Both Christopher and Dana sadly passed away, leaving behind their three kids, one from an earlier marriage, but the foundation lives on as one to help those who have disabilities. My former workshop where i work, Employment Horizons, was supported by the Reeve foundation, and Dana was there for the grant before her death two years after Chris died.

moviebuff82 commented about 25th Anniversary of "A Christmas Story" (1983) - - "You'll shoot your eye out, kid!" on Dec 18, 2008 at 11:05 am

To this day, every Christmas day, TBS and or TNT airs the movie nonstop for 24 hours, with commercials!!! This year, both channels, which are owned by the same company that owns the rights to the film, are showing less ads and more movie. My cousin Chrissy has the movie on DVD, so I can see it uncut and ad free. It also has been released on Bluray this year for the 25th anniversary gift set, and a museum honoring the film has opened in Cleveland. I hope they don’t remake it!!!

moviebuff82 commented about AMC to build 100 digital IMAX screens on Dec 18, 2008 at 11:02 am

The Dark Knight re-release will be the first IMAX Digital feature at the AMC in Rockaway when it opens on January 23rd. I can’t wait soon enough. I’ll probably wait until a newer movie comes out since I might get the new Batman for xmas on Bluray, which has the action scenes in IMAX intact. I’ll probably shoot for the AM Cinema or let Dad use some of those AMC Gold movie passes!!!

http://tinyurl.com/3fzlkz…this link has info about all the alternate versions of Supes, from its theatrical release to the DVD extended version. Another good site to check out is http://www.capedwonder.com/, a great source for Superman info. Superman was one of the first major blockbusters to arrive on the very-new VHS, Betamax, and Laserdisc, a format which was introduced in Atlanta on the same day as the Superman movie. The laserdisc was the only version containing the full length movie, and it was in pan-and-scan!!! Luckily, the movie was re-issued in Dolby Surround on VHS and Laserdisc and also in widescreen in 1990 before the film was fully extended on DVD in 2001 and made its debut on both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray disc as well as a download on most online video stores.

I’ve been to the clairidge only once, and that was for Life is Beautiful. Sound and picture were so-so, but the movie was enjoyable. I didn’t know that it once had Cinerama until I read about it on this page.

I’ve been by one of those theaters while traveling to Mass. To me, those theaters are ghost towns, waiting to get eaten up by a big company in times like these, in which foreclosures are up and the economy is sour.

moviebuff82 commented about Happy 30th birthday, Superman!!! on Dec 16, 2008 at 12:27 pm

I first saw Superman I on VHS from the library in the first vhs version, which was shortened from its original length on VHS when it came out in 1979. Then I bought the DVD, which is the extended version that younger fans know. Big improvement, and a fitting addition to the director’s cut of Superman II which is also good. Thankfully I didn’t watch Superman III and IV, but I saw Superman again on the big screen for the first time in “Returns” and it was pretty good. Hopefully with the next “Superman” movie they get inspiration from “The Dark Knight” and tell a darker Superman.

Next year from this holiday season marks the 15th anniversary of the opening of this great theater. Although ownership has changed, nothing much inside the theater has changed except the showing of more IMAX versions of blockbuster movies. Next year, there will be more IMAX screens in Manhattan thanks to the IMAX Digital rollout in Kips Bay alongside the Empire 25 theater and the NatureMax theater near the museum of Natural History, not to mention my local theater in Rockaway getting the mini-IMAX treatment. Will AMC soon change the IMAX format to digital at this location? It would make sense and save the cost of shipping and handling of the film to the theater.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC East Hanover 12 on Dec 7, 2008 at 1:07 pm

Later this month, this theater turns 15, and it stil draws local crowds from Florham Park/Madison/East Hanover. This theater was opened not too far from an AMC theater in Morristown, which soon became a Clearview like Madison, Livingston (closed), and Parsippany. So far, it hasn’t gone independent like Chatham, owned by Roberts, although they show indie films on a regular basis.

moviebuff82 commented about AMC Ridgefield Park 12 on Dec 7, 2008 at 12:53 pm

later this week the theater will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Any special occasions? “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and “Delgo” are the noteworthy releases coming out. Since AMC took over, has the exterior been changed? I know several Loews theaters made pre-AMC and stadium seating still bear that name as Loews is still a division of AMC Entertainment. That theater is still larger and taller than East Hanover and Wayne!!! I first saw this building while on a commute to the schools in the Ridgefield School district, of which this theater was a favorite of students and staff to go to; nowadays, Edgewater is the place to go.

Ever since this theater opened near the mall, customer traffic near the shopping center has increased, even on sundays when the nearby mall is closed and there is ample parking day and night although getting there is tricky.

Advance tickets are now on sale not only for The Day The Earth Stood Still, but Seven Pounds (starring Will Smith in his fourth movie that played at this theater that started with Pursuit of Happyness, then I Am Legend and Hancock), and Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey in his third movie that will play at this theater following The Number 23 and Horton, which had a successful run at this theater for a long period before the summertime. Out of all those movies playing at this theater, the new Keanu Reeves movie will do exceptionally well, even though the IMAX system won’t be ready until the day after oscar nominations are announced.

moviebuff82 commented about 3D sports could be next big thing on Dec 7, 2008 at 5:51 am

I agree. The only everday games that matter are the rivalry ones. Fox Sports recently signed with 150 theaters to show the college bowl games in 3D live. It won’t be soon before a world series of power or a ufc match comes to a theater near you!!!
