Hello-

I got a kick out the caption for the ad for 2001 on pg.1 of the photo page. well I can go one better. one of the good things about being 68 is having seen 2001 not once but twice during its roadshow engagement at this theater in Cinerama. the visual and audio experience was !!! WOW !!!. I still have the beautifully designed souvenir program. now whether in either of my 2 viewings I saw the original cut before Kubrick tweaked it I have no idea.

Hello-

in reference to the point made in the intro that the locale of the Orpheum has hosted some sort of entertainment complex since the late 1880s. the same can be said of the recently closed 86th St. East. its locale hosted an entertainment complex of one sort or another since the late 1880s as well.

Hello-

hey you learn something new everyday. what exactly is the difference between the 1989 Katz/Harris restoration that played he Ziegfeld and the 2012 one you mentioned?

Arabia? when ? I thought the Ziegfeld ran the 70MM release

Hello-

to Comfortably Cool- I am well aware the current Lyric Theater which houses the truly spectacular play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is not the same Lyric that William Fox used for exclusive engagements of his most spectacular films of the 1910s and 1920s. since the intro at top is for the original Lyric Theater I’m surprised the info about Fox’s leasing of the theater wasn’t included.

Hello-

the intro should also note that filmmaking pioneer William Fox rented out this theater for some of his big films such as A Daughter of the Gods and The Queen of Sheba and Sunrise.

Hello-

i happen to like the two Fantastic Four films that Chris Evans made. so hopefully other Evans devotes can answer a question. i recently bought the disc set with both films on separate discs but the discs contain no extras except audio commentaries. if i had bought the films on the separate discs did they have extras? thanks for any help.

Hello-

to vindanpar- I saw Napoleon twice during its original rum at RCMH. I honestly can’t remember how the curtains were used. so I wouldn’t worry about having a “senior moment” especially if that’s the only “senior” thing you have.

Hello-

I thank Ed S. and mike saps for their replies. as with the Candler Theater I’m guessing the Lyric and the Apollo on the north side of the street though razed were likewise in perfectly decent shape for renovation.

bigjoe59 commented about Harris Theatre on Aug 29, 2019 at 8:30 pm

Hello- a comment and a question.

*not noted in the detailed intro is that the Chandler Theater opened as a movie palace not a legitimate theater. its first film was the 1914 Italian epic Anthony and Cleopatra.

*also I’m assuming the reason the theater was razed rather renovated was that no one wanted to spend the $$$ needed rather than that the theater
in such condition renovation was impossible.

Hello-

this theater closed the end of Jan. 2018 after 30? years in business. the building management company
said it would reopen after necessary structural building renovations were completed. basically wasn’t that one big fib?

in vindanpar’s comment of 7/17/19 he said Zefferelli’s R&J was a replacement “for the shameful presentation of This is Cinerama”. what was shameful about the presentation of TIC?

Hello-

to DEFG- I thank you for your reply but I’m a bit confused. are you saying the scene toward the end of the 1956 film and the 2016 BBC mini-series where Dolokhov rescues Pierre as Napoleon’s troops are leaving Russia was invented and doesn’t occur in the novel?

also might you know why Russian films in 1968 still weren’t doing live sync sound but dubbed in the dialogue in post production?

bigjoe59
bigjoe59 commented about Embassy 1,2,3 Theatre on Aug 27, 2019 at 11:25 pm

Hello-

to DEFG – I still prefer the 1956 Paramount version. why in

God's name would a 7 1/2 Russian version leave out
Dolokhov rescuing Pierre at the end? especially
since Dolokhov apologizes to Pierre for his affair
with Helene and any hurt it caused Pierre.

also I love Nino Rota's score to the 1956 film.
I have it on cd and have played it many times.

as to your note of "very poor casting" I thought
                      Audrey Hepburn WAS Natasha.

two other critiques of the Russian film.
while Napoleon is scene thru out the 7 1/2 hrs.
he never has any dialogue or any acting
                      scenes.

there were live sync sound short films in the
1920s so why would the most expensive film ever
made at the time not have such? the poorly dubbed
in Russian dialogue was a big disappointment.

my favorite version of War and Peace is now the
                      8-part 2016 BBC production.

Hello-

to Mark_L thanks info on War and Peace’s dates at this
theater.

Comfortably Cool- I too prefer the 1956 Paramount version directed by King Vidor. the full length Russian version recently released by Criterion doesn’t even have Dolokhov rescuing Pierre at the end. plus the dialogue wasn’t recorded live but dubbed in during post-production. so how do we know its even the voice of the actor we’re looking at?

bigjoe59 commented about Embassy 1,2,3 Theatre on Aug 26, 2019 at 10:26 pm

Hello-

does anyone know the beginning and end dates of War and Peace’s roadshow run at this theater? the reason I ask is simple. i just picked up the 50th Anniverary Blu-Ray disc of Sweet Charity. in the film’s opening sequence we get a good shot of the intersection of Bway, 7th Ave. and 47 St.. we see Shirley Mclaine jumping on the sofa in the Castro showroom. we get a bird;s eye view of this theater’s marquee with War and Peace. so I’m wondering if this scene was shot at the beginning or the end of W&P’s run at this theater.
