xbs2034 I am the projectionist running it at Lincoln Square. What show did you see it? I am one of 3.

I have a question. As an old time (41 years) projectionist, all I ever had to worry about was Flat (1.85) or Scope (2.25). What the heck is Pillarboxing? Must be a digital thing. Oh and btw, I hate these theatres with no masking.

Orlando, sorry to hear this. I like you, have memories of some old theatres here in NJ. I am now the house projectionist at the Union County Arts Center, and I try to get more classic films in there. I am also trying to get equipment installed and running at the Brook Arts Center in Bound Brook. Lots of hurdles. Money. Management. But I will not give up. I, like you, have it in our blood.

bigjoe59, there are no projectionists in the booth anymore. Everything is run by a computer. If a manager turns the sound up for one show, they probably don’t remember to go back and turn it down. Welcome to the age of digital.

The Drive in closed the first week of January 1979. Construction started on the 6 screen Amboys Cinemas thereafter. The 6 plex opened Dec 7, 1979.

They were doing the renovations when I worked there running Dunkirk in July. 4 theatres at a time.

Drove by what was the old Ritz Theatre. They are filling in the hole in the ground that was the basement under the lobby. There is a new construction trailer across the street in the vacant lot. I wonder if this is for the replacement that will be built.

The shopping center this theatre was in is undergoing a major facelift. When they took down the current façade, the old white aluminum that was on each side of the old marquee made its appearance once more. For at least a few days its a reminder of the old days of the Jerry Lewis Twin Cinema.

Nothing but a hole in the ground and a pile of rubble. Very sad.

Yes the Woodbridge was a nice theatre even after it was twinned. I was the first employee hired by Bob when GCC took it over. I loved doing the marquees. I also have many great memories of Menlo Park. I would return to both theatres as a projectionist in the mid 80’s (85). I would be the last projectionist at Menlo along with my partner Ed. Many great memories.

I’m happy to report that our 70MM print of “Dunkirk” went out in the same pristine condition it was received in. As a matter of fact it is being shipped back to Warner Brothers to be used for select future screenings.

I do a pretty good job of projecting 70MM at the Regal E Walk up in Times Square.

Highly doubtful. With all the water that’s leaked in over the years the moisture has probably caused a lot of damage.

Ive been saying a nice 4 screen drive in would be a hit. 2 larger screens by the river, and 2 smaller ones by the former circle. Open it up from mid march till mid November. It would be a gold mine

Mikeoaklandpark, yes I remember it vaguely from the early 70’s when my parents took me there. walterk, as of now my schedule looks like I will have off all day and night on Saturdays, and Tuesday and Thursday nights. Still not confirmed.

I read where Nolan purposely made the music loud in Interstellar to immerse you in the movie. I agree it did drown out the volume a bit much.

Seattleprojectionist, I last worked full time as a union projectionist 4 years ago last month, when the 10 plex I worked at went digital. I run the occasional 35mm at a non union house once in a blue moon, and I’m lucky enough to be doing 70mm at the Regal Theatre in Times Square NYC. I was hired to do Hateful 8 and now they hired me back to do Dunkirk. And as you a stagehand the rest of the time at Prudential Center Arena in Newark NJ. And less yearly income to go along with it.

markp commented about Amboy Multiplex Cinemas on Jul 1, 2017 at 12:47 pm

Seattleprojectionist, no it was always a National Amusements from day one. But the fact that both GCC and NA home offices were close to each other in Boston, they used the same supplier for many things. It made it easy for me as I worked as a projectionist in 2 GCC theatres for over 10 years and this place for 21 years.

I have to say the renderings have nothing of the old place left. I think its a real shame what its going to look like.

amboyurbex, I give you a ton of credit for going in there and getting photos. The air must be foul. I was in there in late 2008 to get screens and sound equipment out and the air was stale then. And rumor has it cinema 1 and 2 flooded during Sandy when the Raritan River swelled. You brought back a flood of memories for me when I saw those projection room photos. Spent 21 years working there.
