You know a lot folks talk about how boring GCC theatres were.I wish I had little GCC triple to go back to instead of these Monster 20 plexes or more.You really miss it and managing a smaller theatre.But most of you wouldn’t understand.
I am glad i saved a bunch of my BOxoffice magazines they have got to be a great source for so many people on CT.I love those Theatre Stories.There was Disney movie I think about a hot air balloon were you guys promoting that film?
From Boxoffice June 1992.The Barton Creek Cinema was closed because the land it was built on is unstable.Bob Miller,Vice President of GCC in Los ANGELES said engineering studies indicated questionable soil conditions behind the movie house.It is uncertain when the theatre will reopen.It opened in 1986.
From Boxoffice ,June 1992.The Famous Theatre burned down March 15.A case of suspected Arson.Rene Brunet ran it until 1972 when it was sold and became the FAMOUS DISCO, The building had been vacant since 1991.
Oct 2 1994,from the Augusta Chroncile, “AUGUSTANS HAVE KISSED DRIVE-IN GOODBYE.” After being open for three years the Bellamys Tommy Sr, and son Tony have closed the Hi Way 56 Drive-in.They got her going again in 1989.“We had loyal customers but not enough for ten people to come out and work every night on the weekends” said Mr.Bellamy. He said getting prints was a hard part of tracking them and getting them,plus one summer it was the area’s Wettest.“it rained every weekend” said Tony.On top of that right next door a local race track was opened drowning out the sound,your whole car would shake.

Jan.5 1993 a gunman shot himself in the head at the Pleasant Valley Cinemas.While watching “A FEW GOOD MEN”,moviegoers thought it was part of the movie until they found a man slumped over a seat.Police said the man was a suspect in an earlier Raleigh shooting.The film includes a Suicide scene! Really surprized theatre folks in that area did not include this in earlier posts.
J.T. McCormick built this drive in, in a Jacksonville interview with Journalist,Ann Hyman he said"He never went there to see a movie,he perferred his open air screened in."
Sept 1960 at the FOX DRIVE-in a little movie that caused a little stir in this conservative town,“THE MATING URGE” Ist run in the Augusta-Aiken area, Realism and Startling the ad read.Filmed around the world.There was a second feature,but not in the ad,also in color.
Punky’s Ponies was a local business that let kids ride small ponies.They set up at the Hilltop one night for the “kiddies” I rode Punky’s ponies when I was a kid.
I knew when i visited it while it was closed that the screen was new.I have pictures of it closed,but sadly,no way to get them on CT.
