I was just in Newark yesterday to photographs cinemas. The building at 800 Broad St. looks much newer, not like a repurposed theatre. I think this one may have been demolished with a new structure built in its place.
The latest news (from two months ago) is that instead of renovating this into a three screen complex by adding two more screens in other parts of the building it will be kept a one screen theatre with only the original auditorium due to financial reasons.
Hi gencin, I just saw your comment today. I’d love to see those photos if you have them and post them on the CinemaTour website if you granted permission. Please click on my name to find my email address and let me know.
Use maps.live.com and do the birdseye view. It seems the theatre is still there! Look at the building in red. It seems like a small lobby building with along tunnel leading to an auditorium. I’ll be there next week to take photos and see for sure, but this pretty positively looks like a theatre.
No other theater chain will buy any former Showcase Cinemas because Showcase will not sell the properties to anyone who would operate them as a cinema.
It is owned by National Amusements. As with all their other closed theatres (East Hartford, East Windsor, Orange, etc.) they will not sell it to anyone who wants to operate a cinema.
If you go to http://maps.live.com/and type in this theater’s address try going to “Bird’s Eye View” switching the views around. There is no view from the south, but if you use the other views there are two views where the theater is still intact from before the fire, but on the third view the theater has been gutted by fire.

This theatre was mentioned in the July 3, 1937 issue of Box Office magazine as running an occasional Hungarian film at that time.

Correct address was 182 Belmont Avenue. Belmont Avenue is now Irvine Turner Blvd.
It was on Torringford St. I did not see any remnants of the drive-in when I visited the site.
This theater closed in 2006.
This theater is closing at the end of the month View link
The old Sawdust Theatre that burnmed was formerly the Roxy. This is a new building that was never a movie theatre.
Actually this theater opened in 2005.

Paul, do you know if the building still stands or if it is demolished?
This is already listed as /theaters/16961/ – not sure why it was listed again, but this listing should be deleted.
I have been seeking an exact address for this theater for years and have, so far, come up empty-handed.
Nope.
Still closed. See my photos of the building http://www.cinematour.com/tour/us/7874.html
See photos of it as an antique store at http://www.cinematour.com/tour.php?db=us&id=20816
“Why convert with us? ”
Because stadium seating is awful, and some people (including me) refuse to sit in it.
I know that in this area the theatre display ads in the newspapers are paid for but the small listings in agate are free.
…in fact, you can get the East view both ways if you cycle back through it: pre-fire and post-fire. Weird.
