No, Lincoln Square didn’t charge extra for the 70mm shows of Phantom Thread. You could see it before noon for the $8 matinee price.

Alamo Drafthouse also charges extra for 70mm. Some theaters do that.

Where did you read that MP is “demanding concessions percentages”?

They are requesting basic ticket discounts, the same that Costco gets.

And what do you mean they’re making no investments in theaters? They spend millions every month on movie tickets all across the county.

It will be shown in IMAX 3D at Lincoln Square.

Some people here prefer IMAX 2D but it seems to be only scheduled for IMAX 3D right now.

@Al: Cineworld is British, no? I assume UK ticket prices are a bit less than American ones. Plus that’s only one chain, MoviePass covers almost all U.S. theaters. Regal as of right now, to my knowledge, has no plans of pulling out, I talked to one of their marketing people and he says it helps Regal and that he used it himself. Once Cineworld takes over Regal, then it might be a different story. But even then I assume that they’ll create their own program in addition to MP rather than pulling out of MP.

Still don’t know why you see it as a “scheme”. It’s a business.

I don’t think it’s (just) the location that’s the issue. It’s that Landmark 57 doesn’t accept MoviePass.

There is simply no reason for me to go there and spend 18 bucks on a movie when I can get MoviePass to pay for it at another theater. (Like Linc Square for instance, much closer to the subway too). With “Journey’s End” it’s a special scenario, since they were the only theater playing that movie. But often they play the same stuff as a bunch of other Manhattan theaters.

It’s really a shame, given how much money was put into Landmark 57 and how it’s a clean, newly built multiplex. I hope it doesn’t go bankrupt, will start to accept MoviePass and see a nice surge in patrons.

I don’t know if 2D really looks miles better. With IMAX Laser, 3D looks very good as well. The colors don’t get dimmed like they do with realD 3D.

With Black Panther they just switched it up day by day. One day 2D and one day 3D. Might be because it’s complicated for them to switch from 2D to 3D every showing, though I’m not sure of that.

Infinity War seems to go the route of The Last Jedi with IMAX 3D only.

But it will still have the extended aspect ratio, the laser projection and the 12 channel sound. So it’s still a great way to see the movie, even if you’re not a big 3D fan.

@bigjoe:

Yeah, 100%. In fact I just checked the new showtimes for Regal Union Square and CMBYN has been extended for another week and is scheduled there at least until the 20th.

“The Shape of Water” also had it’s home video release yesterday and that’s still scheduled for a bunch of places including Lincoln Square. The new KDM for TSOW for instance (I just checked on foxkeys.com, see screenshot at https://imgur.com/AGFm2Dc) is good until March 23rd. Fox simply sent out a new key and boom- Lincoln Square can play it another week.

No problem, I’m happy to describe this stuff! :)

digital3d
digital3d commented about AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Mar 13, 2018 at 3:49 pm

KDM stands for “Key Delivery Message”. Since the digital movie files are mostly all encrypted (for security reasons, such as fear of piracy), they require a digital code (a “key”) to unlock (decrypt) them. That’s the KDM.

These KDM’s however work only for a limited time period. They expire after some time, after which the studio has to send a new one. If the studio doesn’t, then the theater simply won’t be able to play the movie anymore.

If you go to www.foxkeys.com (password and username are both “fox”), you can go to each theater and see what KDM’s Fox sends out there to theaters and when each one expires.

Regarding crowds: I see plenty of crowds at Lincoln Square too. For some reason, especially after MoviePass but even before, New Yorkers really love to go to the movies. Look at Alamo in Brooklyn. They sell out 10PM shows on weekdays. I don’t know how, but they do it.

digital3d
digital3d commented about AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Mar 12, 2018 at 4:25 pm

It will probably remain if crowds keep showing up. Look at Darkest Hour. That was available for rent and purchase for weeks and it’s still playing in 3 NYC theaters, one of them AMC and one Regal.

In the end thr studio decides. (As I mentioned they can just stop sending updated KDMs). But if the film keeps making bucks at the the theater there is no reason for the studio to do that.

digital3d
digital3d commented about AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Mar 5, 2018 at 3:17 pm

@bigjoe: They can just discontinue sending a new key. (KDM)

But I’ve read in forums that usually the studios allow the movies to continue playing if they do well in that theater.

But yes, if the studio wanted to they could just stop sending a renewed KDM and the theater wouldn’t be able to play the movie any longer.

mhvbear is correct. Disney requires theaters to have TLJ run for 4 weeks in their largest auditorium. Given that Dolby theaters don’t have that many seats that may be the reason some theaters pulled it.

digital3d commented about AMC Lincoln Square 13 on Jan 3, 2018 at 7:36 pm

At least until January 12th since there are no other IMAX releases to replace it with before then. However, it will likely play after that date as well.

Not sure if it’s the flagship but many premieres do happen here, especially after the Zigfield closed. Just recently Molly’s Game had it’s premiere here. Other movies like Dunkirk, The Mummy, Rough Night, Ghost in the Shell, a bunch of Netflix movies and many others had their premieres here just last year. (Note: not all were world premieres, some were North America premieres.)

The fact that this theater has numerous film projectors, a unique IMAX, a comfortable position on Broadway and a shape which allows for the building of tents as well as for special set-ups for press and interviews inside certaintly makes it a very attractive place for premieres. Sometimes studios just use the theater to shoot interviews and do press there. It’s a very popular location by them.

Apparently the Phantom Thread 70mm print was “only” 4k so it might have looked a bit underwhelming compared to other 70mm prints which were higher resolutions. Still drew HUGE crowds here and as mentioned, it comes with a program.

If they would renovate this theater it would probably be without stadium seating, as (to my knowledge) these types of auditoriums here with “direct entrance” wouldn’t work for stadium seating. (Correct me if I’m wrong please) But AMC 84th st for instance has recliners without stadium seating so I think they should renovate anyways.

Or did someone see it there tonight and can confirm?

digital3d commented about AMC Empire 25 on Dec 8, 2017 at 11:39 am

The auditoriums in the E-Walk might appear smaller on Fandango because of the lower amount of seats. That’s not due to the screens being smaller but due to the leather recliner seats, which take up more space than the regular seats in the AMC Empire 25.

Both theaters have reserved seating though so just get your ticket early.

digital3d commented about AMC Empire 25 on Dec 8, 2017 at 10:14 am

The Regal E-Walk is MUCH superior to the AMC Empire 25

  1. They just got new leather recliner seats a few months ago. It’s newly renovated.

  2. It has less screens (13 instead of 25) meaning less other movies playing meaning less crowds. Though some people like a bigger selection.

  3. It does not have any bed bug reports.

Now that doesn’t mean that it has to remain that way. Empire 25 can renovate and upgrade and get on level with E-Walk by getting new seats and renovate. But so far they didn’t and do not seem to be planning that.

I’d chose Regal E-Walk any day over Empire 25.

BTW I have nothing against AMC. They have nice theaters like Kips Bay 15 and others. But the Empire 25 is just gross. The seats and floors are old, poorly maintained plus the bed buf reports. E-Walk just renovated a bunch of their theaters. I don’t see how it’s not superior.

digital3d commented about AMC Empire 25 on Nov 9, 2017 at 4:31 am

He is saying that the Empire 25 should replace their old seats with new recliner seats. Which they should. E-Walk and Kips Bay and a bunch of other theaters have done so already.

Regarding lack of masking: It’s not just an AMC issue. I’ve had the same issue with Regal and local theaters. I’m not sure if there is any theater out there which always masks. AMC 84th Street seems to mask and they have recliner seats. But their admission is also more expensive and I’m not sure if they always mask.

Even fancy theaters like AMC Lincoln Square sometimes don’t mask. It’s an issue which theaters don’t seem to really care about but should. Pillarboxing can take you fully out of a movie.

I’d recommend checking out which auditorium a movie is playing in online and making sure that you catch a scope movie on a scope screen and a flat movie on a flat screen. If you’re not sure try their (AMCs) facebook messaging service as it’s been pretty responsive.

@leowtyx:

To my knowledge (and I’ve been in that IMAX a number of times), the Lincoln Square IMAX has no masking at all. I don’t see how you would mask the bars above and below with a screen so huge. Even the lie-max’s I’ve seen don’t mask.

This video of the IMAX shows it pretty well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iip2zUuJIzc (Though it was taken before the laser renovation, but nothing changed in regards to the screen as far as I know. At least no masking.)

Before laser it was really annoying as the image didn’t even fill up the sides right and left on the IMAX. With laser it is thankfully able to do so again.

If murmuring and confusing audiences is a trend, then it’s a stupid trend. I don’t see it as realistic when I don’t know what Bruce Wayne just told Barry Allen (see https://www.reddit.com/r/DC_Cinematic/comments/79ypaj/discussion_did_bruce_say_great_or_agreed_to_barry/), just annoying.

I can confirm the keystoning issue at the Loews screen (the balcony one) The movie feels almost like a triangle there.

Also I think that and another screen (1 at least) have footage cut away by masking when watching a widescreen movie. The left and right sides have that tiny bit cut off because of the masking beginning over the screen. But that issue I saw at other theaters as well.

People well trained and experienced in projection are expensive. Based on what I read on reddit AMA’s, the theaters just train regular folks (18 and over employees only) to operate the projector if needed. I think replacing bulbs or setting the sound correctly are things those newly trained employees aren’t trained in. Though I think they should be.

I recently made a post about inaudible dialogue and one person responded that the speakers with the dialogue weren’t adjusted to make up for the score. (Not this theater). If modern-day multiplexs can’t adjust sound, I doubt they are thinking of replacing bulbs.

I have gone through the comments. Couldn’t find a single one like you’re describing. Can you screenshot one?

BTW I checked images on google review and there are multiple carpets around the theater.

I am happy you never experienced it but that doesn’t mean that others haven’t.
