Having seen Khartoum at the AFI Silver this weekend, I asked Vince Young where it originally was shown in Center City? I had it in Boyd notes but that was incorrect. Vince replied it was shown here at the Stanton aka Milgram.

I saw “Khartoum” yesterday (meeting none of you but a local friend joined me) & posted a photo of it on the marquee (though during day, not eve when vertical lights up). The movie was enjoyable. All the bells & whistles were employed starting with overture music before curtain opened, and including intermission after 1.5 hours. It seemed to be in 2.76 wide aspect ratio. The print looked excellent. The sound was from behind the screen. I will guess this was a newer print with DTS sound rather than 6 track, but I would like to know if anybody can post.

What aspect ratio will Khartoum be shown? 2.35 scope or the wider 2.75 or 2.76 various websites say it was originally shown? http://www.reelclassics.com/Techtalk/aspectratio-graphics.htm

though I wrote the Intro & that “Juno” profile photo is mine, I almost never get to attend here since I live in Philly but I will see “Khartoum” on Saturday. I’ve changed my own profile photo so if any of you would like to say hello before or after the movie, you know what I look like! (but will be minus suit & tie).

Steve, is the “Khartoum” film (Saturday) a 6 track print, with the sound on the film or is it a newer DTS print? any idea when the print is from?

JodarMovieFan, unfortunately no, as reported by the Sun, reopening has now been postponed from 12-12 to 3-13.

HowardBHaas commented about 35mm era fades as theaters go digital on Aug 20, 2012 at 11:08 am

Resolution. Blu Ray has the pixels equivalent to 16mm. To get 35mm, we need more than 2k though less than 4k. However, 35mm has a nicer “look” onscreen (if it is a good print, nicely projected). And, I’m speaking about the “film” the product, rather than the projection. Have you asked the theater projectionists, Alps about the projection? they are using either 2k projectors or 4k projectors, not both, and I doubt they are receiving 4k films.

HowardBHaas commented about 35mm era fades as theaters go digital on Aug 19, 2012 at 6:35 pm

The last 2 comments don’t make sense to me. Films that are shot with 35mm cameras are superior to those shot with 16mm cameras. Blu ray is actually sort of equivalent to 16mm, but not as good as 35mm. I believe most films are sent out only in 2k, not 4k. Many previews are shown in all houses, so they don’t digital imax in order to present many trailers.

I was here today (Saturday) for 1 PM movie, 2nd week of The Bourne Legacy. Only about 30 people were in the audience. There was NO use of the curtain. It has been 3 years since I was last here, for a Harry Potter film, where the curtain was used. Is the curtain ever used? For a busy opening? for classics? for premieres? is it broken?

JodarMovieFan, I’m sorry. I heard weeks ago of Porgy & Bess cancelation. I should’ve posted it here. I think that was because of ownership not theater competition.

I keep notes of what I see, and my notes are 70mm for Raiders. Somebody may wish to check the Washington Post ad.

I meant the Northeast region, not coast, and checking the AFI page, I see that you, JodarMovieFan, are aware of the 70mm series at the Silver.

HowardBHaas commented about Uptown Theatre on Aug 17, 2012 at 4:14 pm

JodarMovieFan, yes, 2001 was last 70mm for me too at the Uptown, and yes, no more equipment but digital. You are presumably aware that the AFI Silver now has a 70mm festival with 13 titles? Though I agree they belong on the mega sized Uptown screen, it is still neat they are there. I am not sure that there’s any other theater showing 70mm in all of the Northeast coast of the USA.

I saw the 70mm print of “The Raiders of the Lost Ark” that I mentioned in the Intro, in 2001. It really is a shame that such re releases & special events are ignored at the Uptown by AMC.

Often, 35mm projection simply looks better, more impressive.

Ah, main auditorium screen to be preserved- http://www.friendsof1800.org/NEWMISSION/newmission.html Alamo’s founder, Tim League, describes the plan envisioned in the Alamo blog on Thurssday, February 16:

“Even though our plan is to subdivide the balconies into small boutique theaters, we will be doing it in such a way as to pres rve nearly all of the amazing architectural details of the space. We would still preserve the massive downstairs screen and transform that space into a potential premiere venue with state of the art sound and picture. We have been working hand-in-hand with the both historic and neighborhood groups to make sure that our restoration plans meet with their approval. The great news is that the theater interior is largely in good shape. A large percentage of the interior details have been preserved and even most of the light fixtures are intact.”

What happens to the ornate auditorium seen in article 2? does all that get covered up or gutted so 5 screens emerge?
