Enjoyed the new “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” at the Avalon on Wednesday. The surround system is excellent! Was the Swedish version of the movie shown here?
Saw Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol on Tuesday late afternoon, a nice crowd. Curtain hasn’t been used for a year or two because the motor is broke. Movie isn’t being projected on top & lower corner sections, a very minor effect but one that should be corrected. Christie 4 k dual projectors are used. The surround sound is astonishingly good!
I certainly want to continue to see 35 mm classics not DVDs or Blue Rays projected on movie screens. There are many movie theaters, often arthouses, currently with classics programs.
Perhaps because links don’t auto link, I neglected in June to post this link here of current photo of auditorium facing stage! follow link to photo of lighting control panel, too

Giles, many people including myself aren’t bothering with 3D. As I will be in DC for a few days, I’m looking forward to seeing “The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo” at the historic Avalon. Interesting enough, “The Girl” will also be at Baltimore’s Senator. AMC’s website indicates the new “Mission Impossible” will be at the Uptown. I didn’t see “War Horse” yet online in DC, but since it is listed that it will be at the Ziegfeld….
I was at the 2:45 PM showing yesterday! Which showing were you at? Tonight, ABC TV news showed “The Artist” on the Paris marquee in a story about the film.
Excellent 35mm prints sounds impressive. At these classics showings, is the balcony open to sit in? Does the curtain open before the movie & close afterwards?
I also go to see the big screen, but I like to sit in the back! In Radio City Music Hall, the back or upper balconies are too far away, but in most movie theaters today (historic or newer) it isn’t that far away. Today’s stadium seated movie theaters have such large screens, I like the view better from the back, getting the whole picture especially for scope films, and not looking up at the screen.
Because there’s already downtown a stadium seated megaplex (the Regal Gallery)for mainstream movies & the Landmark F Street downtown for arthouse movies, it makes no sense to me to have movies in this arena, too.
The former auditorium. See other photo for the theater’s front.

Meant “setting up”
Is Ziegfeld projection still 2k or upgraded yet to 4k?
Email stated they have a curtain now! Bill refers above to a curtain. Used before & after each movie?
Well, that sure is decorated for the holidays!
Which is the multiplex only a mile away?

Great surround sound is important! And, yes, I’d hope for 4k rather than 2k for the main auditorium.

I’ve not been in this auditorium. How large is the screen? Is this to be 35mm projection of classics?
Wow! That looks like a real gem.

If somebody can find a “proper address” we will post it. I don’t think I could find it online when I added this one.
Simon’s comment was so wonderful he spoke for us all!
Now showcasing “Hugo” in 3D.
The 4th Q 2008 Marquee of THSA states the “Freihofer-Stamper Theatres' Tower was constructed….”
What is an 8k restoration equivalent of? 35mm? 70 mm? Can 2k or 4k projectors adequately show the 8k restoration?
