It was the second GCC to have one of its auditoriums THX certified, after the original Essex Green Cinema large screen did so in the early 1980s. The third one was the rebuilt Essex Green 9 plex in 1997 and then Clifton Commons with two screens in 1999 before the plaque was removed on the main one while the second one became a liemax.

I agree markp. Ever since the advent of DVD with theater quality picture and sound, the advent of Blurays, then DVRs and streaming, have kept people from attending the movies. Stuff like live opera and special events is bringing people to the movies while 3d and IMAX draw the big bucks. This theater is nearing 20 years old and needs a big upgrade.

I never been to this AMC although Fluffy has become a mainstay of this place since it opened nearly 30 years ago. Since it became an AMC, more people have come to this theater for the recliners and coke freestyle machines. Yes, parking is a hassle compared to what you find in Rockaway with ample parking that is shared with other stores and getting there is bad with the traffic.

Went to see Sully in regular at theater #13 after paying a morning ticket to the show. After the cashier checked my stubs card along with what was left of one of many AMC gift cards, he didn’t care to print out the receipt as my dad paid with cash!!!! After the end of the preview for Denial, they didn’t show the film’s rating along with the release date and the AMC logo, which has been common during every AMC screening I’ve been to since nearly three years ago. They recently installed new automatic cleaning devices inside the toilets. Now only if they ramp up the renovations to this theater, as Morristown is a hassle to go to.

I think AMC will retrofit every imax in Manhattan with laser projectors, followed by others on the east coast. Right now they are working on the busiest at LS.

If the laser at AMC Lincoln Square is a success will this theater get it? It’s the second busiest IMAX in the NYC area.

i can’t wait….i think when tickets go on sale the final trailer for rogue one will be released online before making its theatrical debut with Doctor Strange in November. It’s whether it will open. Weather delays might delay the transportation of materials needed to retrofit the laser projectors inside the largest and tallest auditorium on the east coast.

Even without the imax, Sully did quite well at this theater and the one on 84th Street, both the highest grossing venues in the NYC area for that movie when it opened nearly three weeks ago.

That name sounds familiar, he used to run a lot of older movie theaters in NJ that were closed down…I hope they put in recliners and keep prices where they are.

What were the opening features at this theater when it opened?

Mission Impossible 5, unlike the 4th one, wasn’t shot in Imax and was an IMAX DMR remastering from the original format. How’s work going at Lincoln Square IMAX? Seems there’s fewer moviegoers there.

This theater now has reserved seating and will soon get king sized recliners in every screen.

There was an issue at Rockaway where the previews didn’t show up via satellite and then the movie began with 35mm projection. When 4k projection arrived, the DCI became 2k satellite (much like Imax digital but less brighter), with 4k becoming used for main features. I know that some Fathom Events such as Lawrence of Arabia were shipped on 4k drives rather than streaming to the projector for optimal sound quality. The sound quality of the Fathom Events is stereo compared to 5.1 or greater for the main feature. Very rarely they show 3d live events such as Dr. Who, which at the time was the highest grossing Fathom Event ever until the live stream of Batman The Killing Joke. I think next year AMC will renovate every other seat with recliners and make the Atmos theater an AMC Dolby Cinema location which will be the second after the AMC Empire 25. I hope they keep 70mm film for the release of Dunkirk. Sadly the only way to see Sully in IMAX will be at Empire, Kips Bay, or 34th street. Maybe they’ll show it once the renovations are done or just in time for oscar season. Sully was shot on Digital IMAX so the ratio is different and more like widescreen IMAX.

What sound systems does every screen have besides the Dolby Atmos at the AMC Prime theater and the 5.1 Imax screen?

moviebuff82 commented about Kings Theatre on Sep 6, 2016 at 2:38 pm

Had Loews kept the theater open through its corporate history it would’ve gotten multiplexed in the 1980s and in the 90s with Sony owning the theater have SDDS in the screens as well as plush seats along with recliners by AMC. At least the Kings has become a popular venue for performing arts.

moviebuff82 commented about Ziegfeld Theatre on Sep 6, 2016 at 2:36 pm

Oh how i could visit the ziegfeld like my dad did back when big movies came out. It was very expensive when it first opened and it still was until they closed it down. No more Bow Tie cinemas in Manhattan anymore that are still called Bow Tie. That’s the state of moviegoing. There are other Bow Ties around the four boroughs and in NJ. I’d like to see the new management keep the famous Ziegfeld script and add in the ballroom name. I think it will get more crowded with all the extra space once it opens next year.

I agree. Even though most of the mall culture is focused on shopping online, there are a few places that attract these shoppers such as the food court and restaurants as well as the big stores with stuff for people to try out, not to mention a hotel as well as a health pavillion.

I know. After Kips Bay gets the treatment, this will be next on the list for renovations. This past Friday AMC put in reserved seating in its Manhattan locations, including this one.

Perhaps reserved seating is a good idea. Look at the Alamo Drafthouse chain. Maybe they can buy the Sunshine.

That stinks. The thing with projectionists unlike robots is that the humans have more knowledge than the machine. What if the machine breaks down during a showing and up comes an error screen? That is the case with Fathom Events which runs off satellite.
