Trolleyguy commented about Route 66 Movie Theatre on Oct 20, 2015 at 10:42 am

According to the theatre website, “The building once served as the Newland Hotel before becoming a movie theater managed by Dickinson Theaters in 1945. After being sold it sat empty for many years but was restored by a local family music group in 1999. They renamed the theater the Route 66 Music Theatre with live music as the primary source of entertainment. It was sold and renovated in 2003, but the theater closed again after less than a year. However, the screen didn’t stay dark for long. It was purchased in 2005 by Nancy and Scott Hutson.”

In the early 60’s, I worked at a shoe store just north of this theatre, at 1306 S Halsted. The marquee was gone by then, but the building still showed signs of having been a movie theater.

Marcus is now converting all of its auditoriums to Dream Lounger recliners. They plan to have this done by the end of November in time for the release of the new “Star Wars” film in mid-December.

According to the website and Facebook page, this theatre is closed due to equipment failure. It appears that they cannot afford the transition to digital at this time.

It has been announced that this theatre and the others in the Sundance chain will be sold to Carmike for $36M. Carmike will be allowed to maintain the Sundance name, but will not be able to expand the name to its other theaters.

The Star is currently installing power reclining seats to 5 of its auditoriums. Once this is completed, the remaining screening rooms will receive the upgrade, with the exception of the IMAX. A liquor license is also being sought to bring about the cinepub experience.

Actually, it would be a much shorter drive to Sault Ste Marie ON or Mackinaw City for Newberry residents to see a first run movie.

The Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival sold this building to a developer in 2013 and is no longer using it as a venue. The Blade Magic show also moved out that year to a storefront operation further down Central Ave. It would be safe to say status is “closed.”

The movie listed on the marquee was released in 1963, so the photo would have been taken at a later date than 1950.
