The CINERAMA Roadshow Engagement of Stanley Kramer’s classic comedy, IT’S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD opened on August 7, 1964. This was the first single film, single lens projection CINERAMA movie to be shown at the Rosna. All previous CINERAMA films had required 3 films and 3 projectors.

Ret. AKC (NAC) CCC Bob Jensen, Manteno, Illinois commented about Starlite Drive-In on Mar 28, 2010 at 10:25 am

If you go to the Google Map, the Satellite Photo and enlarge it as large as posible you get a good view of the drive-in. You can see the entrance road still exists and the outline of the drive-in The dark shape at the botton is the shade caused by one of the screens that is still standing as of March 28, 2010, the other screen is gone.

The mess all over the drive-in lot?

The City of Kankakee, Public Works Department, now uses it for landscape/yard waste material which is seperated into sections for composting, mulch, chip, brush, large logs. Therefore the mess.

The 54 comes from being located on Illinois State Route 54, which in about 1972 was changed to Illinois State Route 50.

The Drive-In site is now a housing subdivision.

Rafael: Thanks for adding this theater, I’m always glad to see more theaters in Puerto Rico added. I hope you add MANY MORE! I have some I want to add, if I ever get around to it. I had never heard of this one. I like the interesting extra information you added.

Is it possible for you to add the exact address of the funeral home? Then when I go to the Google Map and Satellite Photo, I can see the actual building and on my next trip to Puerto Rico I can find the theater faster.

Thanks

Ret. AKC (NAC) CCC Bob Jensen, Manteno, Illinois commented about Cine Royal on Mar 7, 2010 at 12:25 pm

WHY WE NEED AN ADDRESS?

See the confusion above!

Puerto Rico has 60 theaters listed on Cinema Treasures, only about 10 have an address, I’ll bet no one reading this would be able to find all of the theaters or their former sites, and that’s a shame, all because we don’t have the address. We don’t even know if some of the buildings are standing or if we should be fighting to save them.

This sort of willy nilly way of knowing about these theaters is not going to be of much use to anybody when all us old timers kick the bucket!

I also have the names of about 70 more theaters that are not even listed on Cinema Treasures.

Besides, lets get with the modern times, the next time I come to Puerto Rico, let me enter every theater address in my GPS and let me see all the these wonderful theaters!

Chuch1231: Glad to see an address, but I’m confused, is this for the photo of the store or Cine Royal, I’m Guessing Cine Royal.

It is however 3 blocks over from San Justo?

When I type the address you give in the google map the closest it comes up with is

107 Cll Del Cristo
00901

They add the Del and change the ZIP, I don’t know if that’s important?

I don’t know if the theater still stands, but the areial photo shows a large church near 107 Cll Del Cristo, do you know if the theater was near that church?

Would someone please find the address of this theater?

About the photo which has nothing to do with Cine Royal, right?

I call it for now Teatro “Old San Juan Souvenirs Store 305”

I’m guessing the address is 305.

Lets do some detective work. How bout someone in San Juan looking in the phone book, is this store listed? If it’s listed, Cinema Treasures lists 35 theaters in San Juan
View link
Are any of them on the same calle? They could be a possible match.

If it’s not in the phone book, does the library have copies of old phone books?

Another way to find it would to go to 305 on every calle in Old San Juan (I’ll bet that’s not over 20, Old San Juan is not that big) till you find the right 305.

You could just go up and down every calle to find it and perhaps find some other lost theaters too and it would be pleasant just walking around. Stop and have a hamburger at the Burger King in the old Teatro Rialto.

If none of that works, buy me a round trip ticket from Chicago to San Juan and I’ll be glad to suffer walking around Old San Juan for an afternoon doing research.

If the photo is of a theater that is already on Cinema Treasures it needs to be put with that theater and if the theater is not on Cinema Treasures we need to find out it’s name and I would be glad to add it.

BURGER KING
Calle San Francisco #269
San Juan, Puerto Rico 00901

That should be in Old San Juan
at the corner of Calle Tanca
by Plaza Salvador Brau

If I can find that all out 40 miles south of Chicago, Illinois, I challenge you folks in Puerto Rico to check that Burger King out and see if you can figure out if it’s the old Teatro Rialto and let us know what you find out and have a hamburger in it’s memory.

AGR: (A comment something like this is already under Cine Metropolitan)

“It’s a small World!” But good grief give me a little break, it’s been 44 years (the winter of 1966 is my guess)! I guess I messed up a little on the Charmain Carr story. At least I remember something about Liesl being in Puerto Rico. That I would remember that after all these years just shows your great PR skills. You should be proud, it almost makes you immortal!!!!!!

This theater is located on

Cll Munoz Rivera (you can not use the word STREET in Puerto Rico, it messes up the U.S. Post Office, yes Puerto Rico is part of the United States, and STREET also messes up Google Maps in Puerto Rico)

CAN ANYONE GIVE US THE EXACT ADDRESS SO WE CAN LOCATE IT ON THE MAP?

It is on the southeast corner of Cll Jose J Acosta.

I think it is on the west side of Plaza de Recreo de Vega Baja.

The ZIP is 00693

Phone Number is 787-807-1830

Some additional thoughts on THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

On going through Michael’s list the record goes to

  1. 170 weeks, London, England, UK, Dominion Theater. THAT’S 3 YEARS AND OVER 3 MONTHS!

  2. 146 weeks Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Eglinton Theater. ALMOST 3 YEARS.

  3. 133 weeks San Diego, California, USA, Loma Theater. ANOTHER ALMOST 3 YEARS.

I wonder if a projectionist at the Doninion in London holds the record for running the movie the most times?

Some prints got run a record number of times in those Norelcos.

Vito: Seems to me the union required 2 in the booth for 70mm, is that true? What did a reel of 70mm weigh?

I hope everyone stops for a moment and thinks about how much time and work Michael had to put into this interesting report!

What I remember after about 45 years??

New York, New York, Rivoli, Seems to me they had speakers on the roof of the marquee, that would continually play a recording of chimes/carillon playing the first 11 notes of “The hills are alive with the sound of music”.

Norfolk, Virginia, Riverview Theater, The movie right before THE SOUND OF MUSIC was HUSH…HUSH, SWEET CHARLOTTE with Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland, another Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation, but a completely different kind of film. Black and white, 35mm, 1.66:1, Horror/Mystery/Thriller.
The preview for THE SOUND OF MUSIC just showed a film of a red curtain with words moving across the screen and music that is also used during the titles in the movie. No scenes from the movie were shown.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, Metropolitan, Before THE SOUND OF MUSIC came to Puerto Rico, ads in the Puerto Rico Newspapers, with no mention of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, asked the question who was Charmian Carr? and that she was coming to Puerto Rico. Charmian Carr is of course Liesl, in THE Sound OF MUSIC.
